The Jack White-directed Dead Weather video – “I Cut Like a Buffalo”

DW_car

“I Cut Like a Buffalo” is the third single off The Dead Weather’s under-whelming debut album, “Horehound”. It also happens to be the A-side to their cover of The West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band’s “A Child of a Few Hours is Burning to Death” (which I heard is a really fuckin’ great cover). I love me some West Coast Art Experimental Band, so if anyone reading this has a copy of that tune, please email it to me (or mail me the seven inch if you really wanna get nuts!). You will be greatly rewarded. Or at least thanked in a really exciting way.

I’m unfortunately not too into The Dead Weather record. And I really wanted to be into this new rock outfit cuz my friend Dean Fertita (whom you might have seen also play in Queens of the Stone Age as well as The Raconteurs) is playing guitar (check out a video & mp3 from Dean’s new record “Hello Fire” HERE) in Jack White’s new band. Playing guitar in Jack White’s new band, wow eh? How fuckn’ cool is that? Pretty damn cool, I tell ya. But as much as I wanna dig this Dead Weather shit, it’s simply not that good in my opinion. Doesn’t really sound like they plan on it being a band, comes off more like a well recorded jam session to me.

But I do like this new single “I Cut Like A Buffalo”, I think it’s by far the best song on the record. Plus I dig the samples (are those from a movie? Anyone know?) that they’ve added for this Jack White-directed video. The funny part is that not only did homeboy direct this clip, but he’s the only band member I can spot in the video alongside a team of scantily-clad female dancers. Word on the street is this was apparently shot at Jacky-Poo’s Nashville Third Man Records headquarters. Speaking of, hey Jack… Jeff Wood told me to tell you that he has a few extra SHAT songs which would be perfect for a split single with you on your label. Jeff is ready when you are man. Balls in your court now.

HaHa… I would’ve loved to have been there for the band meeting The Dead Weather had about this music video… You know Jack White dropped something on them like: “So guys! I’ve got a GREEEAT idea for this next video! It’s gonna be me wearing a hat, singing into the camera with a gang of hot female dancers barely wearing anything! It’s gonna look great, you guys don’t even have to show up, sleep in that day in fact. Take it easy guys!” Jack White is now stealing Richard Ashcroft’s bad ideas it seems. Next thing you know Jack will be taking his shoes off and clappin’ em together.

I heard Dead Weather are headed back into the studio real soon-like to bang out their sophomore album. Let’s hope that one comes out a little bit better, cuz like I said above… I really wanna like these dudes. I just need them to give me a reason to care other than Jack White is in the band.

And to kiss this post goodbye, here are two live versions of “I Cut Like A Buffalo”, one from the left coast and one from the right coast.

  • This is my favorite song off of the album too! I love the choking sounds he makes with his guitar. I agree the album isn’t great, but Its got about 4 or 5 tracks on it that I really dig. Also, the B-side for the 7″ single of “Treat Me Like Your Mother” is a cover of Van Morrison’s “You Just Can’t Win”. Its an excellent cover, I recommend checking it out. Keep up the good work, Jack, Detroit is proud of you (even though you skipped town because of the snobby hipsters around here that turned on you when you gained popularity).

  • Actually, here is Van Morrison’s, “You Just Can’t Win” Cover live. Check it out, it fuckin’ rocks! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RgV_7_BW5_g

  • gimmick kid with the eyewear needs to drop those. just makes every project he’s involved in look like it’s membered by my retarded cousin matilda.

  • They suck…….why you writing about this shit?

  • This album is aiiiight, just passing. I dig the sound but the songs are rushed and seem unfinished. Hopefully they spend a little more time writing and recording the new shit.

  • it might get lame in here… definitely lame

  • it’s not good. pudgy zorro’s got enough attention from all the $$ magazines and tv-stations.

Hmmm… no and no. Take it off.

  • yeah albums not too bad, nothing special. respect to em though

  • Thank fucking Christ someone else realized this album was a piece of shit.

Every other website and mag is licking Jack’s asshole like normal.

I love Jack White and all, but I think I listened to 5 songs before taking it out.

  • Thank God I found people who think this album sucks! ‘I Cut Like A Buffalo’ is truly the only jam…I simply cannot get into this album! Jack White is one the most talented musicians in the business, but this album? Not so much!
