The Big Pink – “A Brief History of Love “

It doesn’t sound like these dudes spent music time “writing these songs” and making this record, so I don’t feel that I should have to spend much time reviewing it. And that’s just in fairness, man. You get back only what you put in, kids. The Big Pink kinda sound like that second to last New Order record (the one with Bobby from Primal Scream and Billy “Fuck I Went Bald Way Earlier Than I Planned” Corgan on it) called “Get Ready”. There are also hints of The Jesus & Mary Chain and Depeche Mode in these songs too I suppose, but The Big Pink are nowhere near as exciting as either of those bands. And because of that The Big Pink really shouldn’t be mentioned in the same sentence as those two rock n’ roll greats, my bad! The first single, “Domino’s”, totally blows and I’m sure dudes in neon tank tops dance to it while Steve Aoki DJs it. It leaves a bad taste in my mouth, like when you puke and that gnarley taste lingers all day. I hate that.

And to be honest that’s half the reason I’m reluctant to really give in and like this junk food music, their crowd is a TOTAL BUMMER MAN! Dorks who know nothing about rock n’ roll! I can’t relate! But I do think their song “Velvet” is pretty good. I even DJ it sometimes, but I always make sure to follow it with something cleansing like The Butthole Surfers, The Damned, The Gun Club, Roky Erickson, Gino Washington or The Rolling Stones themselves. You can never fucking go wrong with The Stones when DJing, EVER! FACT! Write that one down on your fucking blog or twitter page dude, cuz it’s TRUE!

  • fyi, the last new order record, which sucked massive schlong (other than track 2), was called Waiting for the Sirens Call and, yes bobby-the-acid-casualty was involved, but chrome-dome-corgan didn’t blag his way in like he did during the Get Ready sessions. just trying to keep it real for ya, brah.

  • Not talking about that one… that’s why I said “The Big Pink kinda sound like that second to last New Order record” which is “Get Ready”

    4. “Vicious Streak” – 5:40
    5. “Primitive Notion” – 5:43

  • I liked my review better.

  • ha! i stand corrected mr. keller. guess in my wiskey-haze i missed the ’second’ in the ’second to last’

  • I think this review hit the nail on the head better than any other. Upon first listen, I wondered, “Wait, these guys sound like JAMC, Primal Scream, and a touch of MBV, but something’s missing.” And I think it’s the fact that these guys have absolutely no personality whatsoever that’s missing.

How could you fuck up a great set of influences so badly?

  • Ok I did not listen to these guys, I’m busy listening to “Imaad Wasif” on the other tab and wondering if their name is like a capitalized drunken slur OR the name of the guy that runs the corner store from my house. Anyways..:)…

Cool Name. Cool Album Cover (they work)

  • You can’t argue with sales figures can you though?

  • double standard (buddyhead standard):

you love kasabian even when they can not achieve more than a couple of party songs that sound like b-sides from their influences.

the big pink is not a revolution but is nice. other bands deserve more to be nuked than the “pink clit”

  • hmm… a little bummed that APTBS is touring with these guys. That song Dominos is fucking weak.

Is the girl on the cover tweaking her nipple?

That may be the only cool thing about this cd.

    Kasabian is wack.

  • You hate it?
    Than I’ll love it!

    Thanks Buddyhead!

Big Pink should thank you too.

    Dios? They shouldn’t thank you.
I wouldn’t buy any shit you guys endorse.

  • thanks for including the running times for the new order songs. this band is OK not deserving of the slamming

  • nice plug for your shitty DJ night, mr. steve aoki wannabe (what a high standard to measure up to)
not the best example of “neo shoegaze” but a tonne better than all that crappy 12 rate stooges knock off garbage your site’s been felching this year..

  • WHo would have thought… angry Big Pink fans…

  • Their live drummer also plays and sings in a band called Comanechi who are pretty cool.

Hilariously, if you go to their myspace, one of the sponsored links reads ‘Dating Chinese Women’: http://tiny.cc/pDDWm
