Searching for Elliott Smith, a documentary by Gil Reyes

poster1

Gil Reyes is making a documentary about Elliot Smith, “Searching for Elliott Smith,” which will feature interviews with movie director Gus Van Sant, Mary Lou Lord, Steve Hanft/David McConnell (who recorded much of Smith’s last album From A Basement Under The Hill), the director of the mini-documentary “Strange Parallel,” ex-bandmate from Heatmiser Tony Lash and Elliott’s then superfan-turned-girlfriend Jennifer Chiba who was in the house when he decided to “meet” Kurdt. But still I ask… how does one stab yourself in the heart twice, on heroin no less?

Here’s a synopsis of the film:
Elliott Smith’s intensely intimate songs helped popularize lo-fi, indie-rock: A traditionally underground genre until Smith’s mainstream effort “Miss Misery” took Hollywood by surprise. But even after an Oscar nomination for Best Original Song, he managed to fly mostly under the radar. And Smith wanted it that way. After his suicide in 2003, Smith’s peers avoided the media. Granting very few print interviews and NO on-camera interviews. Until now. From his high school days as a National Merit Scholar, to his early work in the Portland rock band, ‘Heatmiser’, to critical acclaim… to his mysterious death at the age of 34. We learn the dark motivations behind a musical genius. And discover how psychic pain can also produce timeless art.

Another movie bout a musician that chooses to kill himself and leave a legacy of art behind, let’s just hope it actually talks about his music! We won’t point out all the people they didn’t interview for this and shoulda, but we will say… HEY, Gus Van Sant if you’re thinking bout doing another shitty movie about this as well please leave out Kim Gordon’s bad acting, and 2 hours of making macaroni and cheese, please. You still owe me 14 bucks from that shitty “Last Days” bullshit!

  • He wasn’t on heroin when “he stabbed himself in the heart”.. he was on prescribed amounts of meds given to him by his psychiatrist.

  • last days was an incredible comedy

  • [...] If you wanna see a real documentary about looking for Elliott Smith, watch “Strange Parallel” — oh, wait, here it is. VIA. [...]

  • spell his name correctly.

  • i felt that the “t” was silent, but here ya go.

  • [...] Buddyhead does a posting about an upcoming documentary about Elliott Smith HERE. [...]

  • just like kurt cobain he influenced a plethora of shitty imitators like fleet foxes. i think he can be considered a gen x (i hate saying that but it’s true) dylan. although it’s sad he killed himself/or was murdered at least he didn’t stick around to release shit recordes like “planet waves” “slow train coming” “street legal”.

  • Come on, Fleet Foxes are an obvious product of hippie parents that played too 70’s folk i.e. CSNY, the Band etc……don’t balme Elliott bitch

  • cunt, i’m not. i like him you fuckin twat. but everyone who listened to elliott smith and formed bands or who were influenced by him and rode his nuts are making a watered downed boring version of him. elliott smith is brilliant and his music has real feelings and emotions. the fantastic fleet foxes and look at that old grizzly bear and boned iver and all those really shitty indie boring new folk bands took notes from elliott smith, but they were really bad notes like second hand notes. so what i’m saying is he checked out and while i dont think it’s good he did it’s probably better that he did so he didnt become bob dylan and release a catalog of bullshit after he got married and found god and started dressing like a creepy cowboy. so fuck off.

  • fleet foxes are a product of lack of imagination and originality. if there were a god it would not allow bands like that into the gates without charging a cover.

  • street legal gets a bad rep

even the worst bob dylan record is better than most music (especially since 2000)

  • whats wrong with dressing like a creepy cowboy, the Mans the Uncle you wish you had.

  • fleet foxes is how you come down and go to sleep after going off. its either chew a couple of xanys or put that shit on. your ears will tell your brain to shut down soon so you dont have to hear it anymore.

  • listening to fleet foxes in order to fall asleep is only acceptable if it comes with a guarantee i’d never wake up.

the only good thing to come from the fleet foxes is the video of jorma taccone dancing along while they prep for their SNL appearance. he really couldn’t slap the dicks out of their mouths better than when he jams on his saxophone.

  • To me Dylan’s last two albums (not including the christmas one) are perfect. So Shake Shake Mamma like a ship goin out to sea!

Oh yeah and Elliott… maybe he had a knife in each hand and stabbed simultaneously. Ouch. Anyway, I just remembered that Buddyhead turned me on to Smith’s “Basement on a Hill” back in ‘03. So thanks.

  • you all are stupid. im a pretty big fan of his tunes and i always WISH i wanted to be a part of these forums. instead every few months i check them out and its all banter and speculation about what people want to and think about this character. fact of the matter is you dont know and never will. it is a part of his amazing mysticism, thats part of the allure, however then it goes to far and ya’ll make it sound like you knew him better then he knew himself. SO, instead of counter productive bullshit, how about people comment when they find new videos/bootlegs/ collaborations and what have you, that seems more worth my time.
