RIP Brendan Mullen

brendan-mullenIts a sad day for Punk Rock, as Brendan Mullen died early yesterday morning. The man behind the LA’s legendary Masque, where the careers of the Germs, Weirdos, Screamers, and just about every early LA Punk Band started, died from complications from a stroke he had suffered on Saturday. He was 60 years old. There is no question that The Masque, and Mr. Mullen played a critical role in the rise of Punk Rock in LA. He was also the author of “We Got the Neutron Bomb: The Untold Story of L.A. Punk”, “Lexicon Devil: The Fast Times and Short Life of Darby Crash and the Germs”, “Whores” (the Jane’s Addition book), and most recently “Live at the Masque: Nightmare in Punk Alley.” We are way bummed about this.

lexicon devil was a good read

  • My big memory of Brendan Mullen is him in “Decline Of Western Civilization” explaining why disco incites one kind of reaction in people but punk inspires something quite different. He made a big impression on me when I was 13 years old, and I still think he rules. Shame to hear about this. RIP.

  • One of the last, of a dying breed of truly authentic music lovers. Hopefully, despite his death he will be cherished and appreciated far into the future, and this will counter the fact that he was pretty much ignored by the contemporary music press during his life.

As a brief postscript, I don’t want to detract from his American achievements at all, but Mullen was actually a Scotsman. Any fellow Scottish Buddyhead readers (and British music fans as a whole) should be proud that our small, rainy island produced a person of such integrity.

We can learn many great things from a person such as this. Let us not forget him. Peace.

  • Rest in Peace, sir.

  • RIP

  • he was a good lad.

  • WHAT ABOUT RIP DON DECKER

  • Never met him, but I’ve heard amazing stories from those he helped. Scenes don’t just happen, someone has to create them. RIP>

  • Geza X once took me to The Masque in 88. Long after it closed. I’ll never forget that day and how he talked about Brendan. One of the best days of my life living in Hollywood.
