02/21/08 - Here's some more info on our newest "signing", Jubilee.

Let's cut to the chase…

Jubilee is a rock n' roll band from Los Angeles, California. "Rebel Hiss" is their first release, and also the first single from their forthcoming debut album. The initial components of this new group being Aaron North on vocals and guitar (Nine Inch Nails, The Icarus Line, Buddyhead dickhead) and Michael Shuman on bass and vocals (Queens of the Stone Age, Wires On Fire, KXLU Program Director dickhead), the band started as a vision of an outlet for these lads to explore other musical avenues than they'd ventured into before. Say… What would happen if you mixed The Replacements with The Stone Roses? Neil Young with Blur? Jane's Addiction with Bob Dylan? Creedence Clearwater Revival with The Verve? Maybe it had even already all been done before. But who cares? Cos if it had, then it sure hadn't been done enough. The band's sound was fully realized with the addition of Evan Weiss on guitar and backing vocals (Yet another Wires On Fire dickhead). Now, here's where you either just get really bored, and stop reading, cos any more info is pretty much inconsequential, and could possibly put you to sleep. The music is all that really matters anyway. But, if yer interested in the even jucier tid-bits, then read on my friend…

Without any sort of scheme to light the world on fire, the band started "jamming" and recording music at their own studio, "Shabbey Road". The approach was so careless, the group hadn't even bothered to work out such minor details as… a drummer… or even a band name for that matter. But with such a wide assortment of percussively inclined friends always swinging by the studio, the thought of only recording their songs with just one of them seemed inhibiting. By the time the album was more than halfway done, folks such as Carla Azar (Autolux), Josh Freese (Devo, A Perfect Circle, Nine Inch Nails, eh… everybody), Kevin Haskins (Bauhaus, Love & Rockets, Tones On Tail), and Josh Homme (Queens Of The Stone Age, Eagles Of Death Metal) had already laid down some heavy skin-pounding… And that's just the tip of the iceberg. Other collaborators will reveal themselves upon the album's release… Hey, spoilers are just no fun. The group then concluded that because of the positive and inspiring environment centering around this new endeavor celebrating life, that no other name would be appropriate for them than Jubilee. And the first batch of results…

Jubilee's first 7-inch / cd single, "Rebel Hiss" is already widely available throughout the UK. This digital offering of the tunes has now been handed over to enjoy world-wide. Drumming duties on "Rebel Hiss" were handled by Mr. Josh Freese, and on the 7-inch B-side tune, "Fuzz Are Down" by Sir Loren Humphrey (The Willowz). The band has freshly returned from a very well received tour of the aforementioned British isle, and with another single on the way before summer reaches, the band will tour again soon somewhere else you probably won't be able to see them at. And don't let the extensive cast of drumstick twiddlers on these recordings throw you off the trail here. This is NOT some sort of one-off experiment, or even worse, "side project". This is the real deal champ, and "Rebel Hiss" is just a tiny taste of what's ahead.

- The Cassettes critically acclaimed record, "Neath The Pale Moon", will be re-released in Australia sometime around March of 2008 with bonus tracks, new artwork and we don't know what else. Who knows, maybe they'll even play some shows over there... We'll keep you posted the second we hear more on this. For now check out their new video for "Rogue Gnome".

- The Philadelphia Weekly has a live Popo review up. Click here to read it.

- Moccasin are currently recording a full length for Buddyhead in their hometown of Denver, Co. In the meantime you can get their record "last Leaf" in the Buddyhead store, it's only $5.99!

- A few years ago we had a charming young Jewish boy named Matzah who somehow, unbeknownst to us, slithered into our lives and proclaimed himself as our intern here at Buddyhead. We went with it cuz we're easy going like that and immediately put the chap to work. He did a wide variety of things that ranged from watching us day-drink beers to listening to us talk about how cool we are to running the Buddyhead contest page. Well, like all children... our intern grew up, spread his wings, flew from the nest, got married, had kids of his own and started up his own record label called I Hate Rock N' Roll. Ok, he didn't get married and have kids...

Hey Matzah, we're proud of you man! And you really couldn't have picked a better time to start a label, what with record sales so high and the stable future of the music industry! Ha, have fun with that one bro!

Anyways, here's the skinny you really wanna read....

I Hate Rock N' Roll's first release is a lovely 12 inch record split between Moccasin (who we just signed to Buddyhead about a month ago) and Darker My Love (one of our favorite LA bands to bogart mushrooms from). Looks like at least some of our impeccable taste rubbed off on homeboy! This hot potato is limited to 1,000 hand numbered LPs with custom labels that features two Moccasin songs (one being exclusive), one exclusive eight minute Darker My Love song, and artwork designed by Tim Presley (who also happens to play guitar and sing in Darker My Love). Can you say "HIGHLY COLLECTABLE"?

Go on and preview the songs at @ http://www.myspace.com/ihrnr.

Then grow a pair and order this puppy @ http://www.ihaterocknroll.com.

Ladies and gentlemen get ready... the twisted brain-child of Mr. Jeff Wood that's known as SHAT is hitting the road. You've never seen a live show like this, trust us. You will either be inspired or offended... there's no middle ground with this band. SHAT have been called "our generations Bob Dylan with a particular predilection for vernacular references to the more choice pieces of the female anatomy"... we're not gonna argue with that. You can find their new 69 song cd "Cuntree" (which is also 69 minutes long) in your local record store or on Itunes by clicking here. Check our Shat on myspace or visit their website

Shat is on tour right now in America.

The Cassettes - O'er The Mountain

"O'er The Mountain" was recorded in 2002 during the last months of The Cassettes original lineup of Shelby Cinca on Guitar/Vocals and the Dead Meadow rhythm section; Steve Kille (Bass) and Stephen McCarty (Drums) with the additional assistance of Jennifer Potter on 2nd Guitar. Finished post-humously when the band in this configuration decided to part ways. These recordings are a culmination of late night sessions between Shelby Cinca and Steve Kille obsessing over Wings, T. Rex, and Badfinger records, creating their own take of inspired and positive rock tunes. Driving songs such as "All The People" and "This Will Pass" with their hopefully Lennon-esque message. Also herein is the rare vocal performance of drummer Stephen McCarty on "Meteor Rock". The opening and closing tracks of "O'er The Mountain" illuminate a prescient vision of what was to come with the mystic country sound that The Cassettes later adopted on the forthcoming double-album "''Neath The Pale Moon" to be released on Buddyhead Nov. 14th, 2006. Conceptually, the prequel of a musical journey that begins with an un-named protagonist through mountainous terrain and enchanted forests. Recorded by Shelby Cinca and lauded as one of his favorite 8-Track recordings he has ever done. Mixed later in the year 2002 by Chad Clark at Silver Sonya and now re-released digitally on Buddyhead after an obscure Italian CD pressing in 2003 on Alice Records. This digital release also contains original demos of Shelby and Steve recorded at the fabled Mystic Gnome Mobile Studios in Arlington, VA at The Stonehenge House.

05/25/06

- Welcome to the new Buddyhead Records website. It's fuckin' pretty, ain't it? It was graciously created by graphic designer ALC4, head over to that site and give them a big slap on the ass from us. The bad news is: This site is still missing a few things and we'll be fine tuning it over the next few weeks, bear with us. The good news is: We've got a ton of great new releases coming out (most on August 8th, 2006), so here's a quick run down of who's freshly baked around here... errr we mean, what's freshly baked around here... tell your local store to order all these records.

- modwheelmood - "Enemies and Immigrants". Led by current Nine Inch Nails member Alessandro Cortini, and accompanied by former Abandoned Pools guitarist Pelle Hillstrom, Modwheelmood's sound is best described as "alternative pop electronica", yet is a stimulating departure from the typical laptop based bands who label themselves as "electronica". This new EP hits stores August 8th, 2006. It is available digitally on itunes now, click here to buy it. www.modwheelmood.com

- Wires On Fire's debut self titled full length, was produced by Alain Johannes and Natasha Shneider (Eleven / Queens of The Stone Age / Mark Lanegan) and hits stores August 8th, 2006.
