New Video: The Icarus Line @ Sunset Sound

The Icarus Line boys are BACK with a new record that’s about to come out (interestingly titled “Joe Cardamone V.S. The Icarus Line” and recorded at their own studio “Gang Bang Park”), a handful of singles as well (one that might even appear on Buddyhead Records if everyone plays their cards right) and somehow LA’s dangerous sons even tricked The Captain into re-joining the band, again! Like most good things in this world The Icarus Line have a love-hate relationship with most people close to them. Case in point, I’m pretty sure this is the THIRD time The Captain has joined The Icarus Line! Now that’s a good story!

But unlike most “dangerous” rock bands, The Icarus Line aren’t all style over substance. In fact The new material is as good, if not better, than anything they’ve written in the past. The new album is pretty sick, and it seems they know it cuz the first single is called “We Sick”. Check out this AIFF of Suicidish “Bad Bloods” and a cute little movie that Joe (check out his 13 Answers to our 13 Questions here) cut together of the band recording at Sunset Sound. Give Joe a break, he just learned Imovie. It’s all bringing me back memories of the good old days when we were drugged up kids just trying to not make it! The great part is The Icarus Line is still kicking ass in their older and wiser age, taking names and ripping like a real rock n’ roll band should. This is the sound of DANGER kids! Mystil ain’t got nothing on these white boys!

  • I really hate being one of those people who always say the old stuff was the best but this is the case with the Icarus Line. Mono and Pennance were amazing albums, but the Black Lives and by the sounds of it JCvsTIL are just going more towards the realms of medocrity (but I have only heard 4 or 5 tracks off the new album so I might be being a bit harsh). Still I have to hand it to them, at least they are doing something different for each album.

  • Well Stephen… thanks for bumming the party out and not knowing what you’re talking about. Everyone loves that guy. Why don’t you wait til you hear the official record that ISN’T OUT YET and then come back, check in and voice your opinion then? Sound like a good plan there champion? I think you’ll be surprised cuz I agree with you when you say Black Lives wasn’t as good as penance soiree (but then again when you got a dude playing guitar who can barely talk cough*dondevore*cough what do you expect) but I think this new album is as good if not better than anything they’ve done in the past. On top of the songs being some of the best they’ve written, they recorded it themselves in their own studio, seem to be a tightier group of friends than they ever have been (and having more fun too) and this new album seems to be more well rounded too… more types of songs… different shades of Icarus if you will… All I’m saying is check out the new record and check back in, I’d be surprised if you weren’t impressed. Because I’m prolly the biggest Icarus Line critic/fan there ever was… and I’m fucking impressed. I’m a fan again and I’m stoked on it.

  • Wow that was a big comment. I’m a dork.

  • Well like I said I havn’t heard the whole thing, so yeah you are dead right and maybe they will come out with an album that will melt my face off and maybe I shouldn’t have bummed the party out with my opinion. But just remember my opinion is worth what you paid for it…

  • Yeah well you just remember you are the guy who bummed out the party… wanna know how many people like THAT GUY? Go on and guess there Stevey…. I’ll give you three tries, one comment but three tries… GO!

  • I’d love to answer properly, but whatever I write you’re gonna throw it back at me (including this).

Seriously though, if my opinion can really bum your party out that much then is it really that good of a party? Maybe I should FedEx you guys an 8 ball or something, get that party really going?

  • Each album is different, its like when people ask ‘what is the best album of all time’, its a dumb question cos shit is always different stuff to different people.

As for the Bad Bloods, it reminds me of Iggy nightlubbing, which is one of my favourite songs so its all good ye ken.

  • The only danger you face with the Icarus Line is being bored to death.

I will admit that it’s amazing how much boring they can cram into the 3 minutes and 53 seconds of We Sick. It took the Stooges over 10 minutes to achieve that with We Will Fall.

  • YES! I’m stoked. I thought Icarus Line was going to fade into distant memory, but I’m glad ther’re coming back strong.

  • If you’re gonna fed ex me something… fed ex me a good drug at least. Like Chocolate.

  • So what’s the line up?

Bought an Icarus Line hoodie years ago but Peter Hook signed it.

    European tour dates?

  • (but then again when you got a dude playing guitar who can barely talk cough*dondevore*cough what do you expect)

    I lol’d… but ouch

Do 13 Questions with The Captain then and all is forgiven Trav. C’mon!

I like telling you what to do, it jacks me off real hard.

  • I’ve seen the Icarus Line three times over the past ten years. Though I never necessarily went to see them, I still own some of their shit. Overall all the shows were fairly odd and entertaining.

Show One: Maybe 2000? They opened for Jets to Brazil at the troubador, and the bassist (I think) was so fucked up mid-song, he fell of the stage. Good introduction.

Show Two: 2002 at The Roxy with Dillinger blah blah and SHAT. Why the fuck so many people antagonize The Line while they play is beyond me. Eventually I recall one of the members going into the crowd mid song, or after a song to fuck someone up. Either way, shat had on a dildo mohawk. Good night.

Show Three: 2002 Icarus Line at The House of Blues with Andrew WK. Drugs make you do a lot of things, but see Andrew WK? Anyway, fuck me. The drummer tried to rip down a huge banner of that fuck twat with the bleeding nose. Good time.

Overall, come to think of it; why I haven’t seen them for the entertainment after 02 is beyond me.

Also, Spiritualized still rip. Fuck all yall.

  • one of my favourite bands, and it’s good to see them getting repped by the Head again. kind of like of Morrissey and Marr made music together again, minus all the crying, and plus a lot of drugs.

  • Is Watson in Icarus and the Burning Brides? The Brides are fucking great.

  • Bro, Icky always ruled. Stoked for the new one.

Do 13 questions with Don Devore. DO IT CHAMP.

  • I’ve heard most of the new record, and yeah, man it fuckin’ rips. Really rock and roll. Think ‘Black Lives’ the song but like, way tighter.

And travis, get on that 13 q’s with the Captain man. Dude, tried to beat up the entirety of Sodomized Sevenfold, gotta give props…

  • GET BAAAAAAAAAAAAAACK AAAAAAAAAROOOOOOOOOOOONNNNN!!

  • it’s fuckin white boy day all over again. luv it.

  • wait, raul mondesi the baseball player? thats the funniest shit in this thread.

  • how about we all stop fighting about this & just email the album & I can be happily on my way. fuck the bullshit! i know somebody on here has to have a mastered copy laying around on their computer.

  • Penance Soirée was one of my favourite albums of the decade, it ripped all of those other pussy rock bands a new one.

  • Odd that they’re output is considered to have gone down after AN left.

Which is funny because Jubilee’s output hasn’t really gone anywhere lately. What’s with that?

Not hating, just asking. For the record, I totally dig the new Icky Line tracks, maybe not as much as Mono or PS, or even Red/Black, but yeah.

  • Yeah where the fuck are those Jubilee tracks?

  • This shit sucks.Period. There’s a reason some songs die as demos, this song is a fine example. Its starting to make sense why Aaron jumped ship on both parties involved here. Travis branched out and got some really bad writers that can’t even jock his style on their best day and the drugs stopped working for Joe.

  • I’m stoked. I like what I’ve heard of this so far, some songs maybe more than others, but I’m looking forward to hearing the rest of what these guys have to offer.

  • DO MORE DRUGS JOE

  • sounds pretty good. joe’s vocals in general are phenominal. the band just seems to lack the punch it had in the penance soiree era. but i’ve only heard bad blood, so i’ll keep my fingers crossed for the album!

  • We Sick is a grower that grew on me just now. Let’s go swimming in the living room!

  • Good stuff, all we need is for Aaron and Don to return and they’re set.

  • One question: What the hell do you play an AIFF file with?

  • The Captain and Alvin hold Icky down well enough without Aaron and Don… it’s a wet dream come true, and sure one of the punkest things Joe could do is erase whatever bad blood there is between him and the former members, but why should history repeat itself? Let’s go swimming in the kitchen bitch!

  • 13 Q W/ DON DEVORE OF FRAIL. LET’S GO.

  • bring that nigga lance back. alvin is da pinoy holding it down.

  • I am Aaron North. My name is Aaron North.

  • wasnt wesley willis that kid from dazed and confused…

  • i love the icarus line. i’ve had them play my club in canada twice, and both times what i got was a real band that actually is into rock & roll, not pop(ular) bullshit. was the last record as good as penance? who cares, it was better than 80% of the shit that came out at the same time.

  • crunching guitar riffs that make men drunkenly swagger and women sexually swoon. you would be suprised at how many pairs of panties i have gotten to come off whilst listening to a little ditty called “white devil”

  • good one
