Mellowdrone – “Angry Bear”

Mellowdronex
“Angry Bear”
self-released

I really dig Mellowdrone and from what I’ve read so do tv and video game music directors.  They remind me of the good rock bands from the 90s and the lo-fi indie rock bands of the present.  Their bass tone has just the right overdrive to keep me interested, the clang in the guitars has that perfect “alternative rock” edge.  The lead vocals remind me of Jesus & Mary Chain, Queens of the Stone Age and Failure, but sometimes like U2.  Most of the time the lead singer,  Jonathan Bates, sounds like Steve Kilbey of the Church.  They do have their own thing going, however much I want to dig through my 1994 cd’s.  They’ve had 2 albums and a handful of EP’s since 1999 so they have plenty of material to dig through.  I’ll probably check these guys out next time they play in town, in the meantime I’m trying to find my copy of “Superunknown.”

  • Yeah bro. Shits a rawkin’

  • Loving this album right now.

  • this review sucks. “the clang in the guitars has that perfect “alternative rock” edge.” sweet, brah

  • i think kevin costner wrote this review

  • this band had a couple of good songs early on, with that whole 90s vibe, but it never went past fashionably uninvited.

i had a gf with a crush on the singer who loved that song. fast forward a couple years when they got a first album out, dude was balding bad, and the album was crappy melodic nu-metal. no way in hell would i put myself through this one.

  • I remember talking to the rhythm guitarist at a show in ‘06. He mentioned the band was working on the second album and said its going to be really good. He was right. You’d be hard pressed to find a better rock album in 2009. Angry Bear is a classic record and is hands down the album of the year.

  • “They do have their own thing going, however much I want to dig through my 1994 cd’s”. What the fuck does that mean?

  • As for “oldirty” you have no idea what your talking about. If you think there first album sucked, then your one broken music listener. That album is flawless, the structure, the lyrics, his voice and the mix of indie rock and electronics. Its starts and ends the same way, fucking great. Angry Bear was more based around simple instruments used to make a textured rock sound. To look at the aesthetics of an artist and say he is talentless due to the lack of hair on his head is ridiculous. I recommend there stuff to anyone, all there stuff is beautiful. If you’ve been living under a rock for ten years, you should wake up.

  • seriously, “ol’ dirty”, do you even listen to music? what do you mean by nu-metal? because “Orange Marmalade” is totally a metal song.

whoever happens to read these comments, pay no attention to this idiot. i personally love the stuff, but form your own opinions about the music, because morons like “ol’ dirty” who know nothing about what is being reviewed will try and put you off quality stuff.

and yeah, this review kinda blew. we get, it has a lo-fi, garage band sound. no need to ramble for a paragraph about other bands.

  • Jameson you gonna take this shit talk?
