High on Fire – “Snakes For The Divine”

High on Fire
“Snakes For The Divine”
E1 Music

Back in 2002 at the last More Than Music Festival I saw both Mastodon and High On Fire perform on the same stage, way before anyone gave much of shit about either band. Mastodon played early to a nearly empty room, wowing exactly nobody. Later on, High On Fire killed it, converting me almost instantly. Converge played right after them and it was embarrassingly evident how little they rocked in comparison. And yes, I did just say that to piss of Converge fanboys, but it’s also the truth.

I recently saw all three of these bands perform again on the same bill this last Fall when the Dethklok tour came through town. Well, Converge still sucks live. But now High On Fire find themselves the opening act for Mastodon, a band riding high on their successive string of concept albums. Apparently HOF and Mastodon are really good friends going years back now. I mention this because maybe it’s time for Matt Pike to step in and say something about how Mastodon’s been sucking donkey balls for awhile now.

You see, Snakes For The Divine is evidence that Matt Pike gets it. Dude is running on a streak of amazing albums going back to Sleep’s Holy Mountain, almost two decades of solid work. This guy understands that both Metallica and Megadeth did their best work on their first three albums. This guy understands there are very good reasons why nobody outside shrooming nerds gives a shit about King Crimson after their first album. He knows that writing about metaphysical shit is awesome, as long as it hearkens back to the real world (i.e. Blessed Black Wings is a metaphor for drug addiction). So maybe he can tell Mastodon that if I have to read a book or hear a half hour story to understand their album the band has failed. Every time High On Fire comes out with an album, I don’t need to know shit. I just think High On Fire=dark=evil=metal=good times. And that’s what I get every fucking time.

Snakes For The Divine is exactly how to do awesome heavy metal album full of hellfire and demons from alternate dimensions. I get memorable guitar riffs that shred my face off, booming earthquake bass and a drum section that sounds like Satan himself is at the kit. What’s really impressive is that this band is still pushing to new extremes. Jeff Matz’s bass has been brought out on this album and it really shows. While I enjoyed Death Is This Communion, it doesn’t have the punch that Snakes For The Divine has. Des Kensel continually outclasses most other drummers and he shows no signs of slowing down. Matt Pike remains one of the last guitarists that remain able to compose an interesting guitar solo, as opposed to just endless jerking off and going nowhere. Mastodon, I’m looking in your direction.

  • I’m sure they’re cool, but why does their record sleeve look like Meat Loaf ‘Bat Out of Hell’?

  • I like this album quite a bit, but “Matt Pike remains one of the last guitarists that remain able to compose an interesting guitar solo” is one of the dumbest things I’ve ever heard. You really think he’s one of the ONLY guitarists in modern music that puts together compelling guitar solos? You need to branch out a bit.
You should write a review for Crack the Skye since it’s clear that that’s the album you actually wanted to review and Mastodon is the band you actually wanted to talk about. Got a chip on your shoulder about Mastodon and Converge? You’re not doing HOF much justice by airing your grievances in your review of their record.

  • I always like when these guys get positive press over Mastodon. Mastodon are boring prog wankery.

  • Metal sucks and you’re all dorks.

  • drunkwithpower ftw

I’m always amazed when a person disses a band for not being the band they want them to be. What they hell else can they be than what they are? Its THEIR band, remember? Both Mastodon and HOF would beat your head in Carnahan.

Both bands rock. Carnahan, you’re a shitworm.

  • great review. BULLSEYE on HOF and BULLSEYE on mastodon

  • To compare Mastodon and High on Fire and then say you like them better because you dont need an explanation, a book or use your brain to actually think for once is a stupid statement to make when underneath all the heavy riffs pike is laying down there is a whole story about the theory of Adam and eve being decended from a race of reptiles or maybe you didnt understand that this to is a concept album just like the ones mastodon puts out…

both bands rock, both bands have a deeper story going on with albums they make..

  • I saw both bands together on tour in the early 0’s and they had the opposite effect; everyone vanished after Mastodon and HOF played to a half empty (small) room which was a shame as they were great.
Im glad Pike is still putting out records with them but after catching him with the Sleep guys doing Holy Mountain it would be nice if they could record together again.

  • No way, y’all. Mastodon shreds.

  • I like all three bands! And they were all great when I saw them last fall, with Converge clearly stealing the show. So, fuck off.

  • [...] If you haven’t heard of Brigitte Fontaine & Areski Belkacem, they have probably inspired some bands you listen to, unless you think good bands sound like Satan is playing the drums. [...]

  • … So if you want to listen to the exact opposite of High on Fire, visit Mix Cure!

  • you clearly are talking about a scene you know nothing about. high on fire is pretty standard generic metal that could have come out by anyone for the last 30 years. Converge sucks live? are you sure your talking about the same converge? r u sure you have eyes and ears that work correctly? r u sure your not a fucking retard? r u sure your not a douchebag california dicksucker who knows absolutely zero about our scene? dude motherfuck high on fire. converge was already underground cult heroes and literally already had multiple classic records under their belt before high on fire even existed. converge is a very important band because as you obviously dont know they were one of the bands that made the 90s underground hc/metal scene so important because it kept alive the by kids for kids /underground mentality alive. fuck you dont talk about scenes you know shit about . talk about fucking shitty retro indie garage rock dude and all your charity buddyhead garbage bands

  • i bet what happened was you were at a shitty metal show with high on fire full of smelly metal dorks and thats why the CROUD proabably made you think converge sucked live. If you were a hrdcore kid in the 90s and not a cali pole smoker then you could try and talk about converge like you know what the fuck your talking about homey. i should punch you in your face. our scene was the very progression of the underground punk/indie/diy movement strting back from when you didnt exist you coward. talk about the fucking black lips or some other little kid shit

  • go to a legitimate hardcore show first and see converge if thats still even possible and trust me those kids and converge will give you an incredible show.

  • [...] watch former 333 weirdo dorks Do Chimps Battle? (I mean if you have to ask) and Buddyhead blogger Brian Carnahan’s loud sludgy jucivinsesque outfit, Churches Burn. Details too salacious, a blast was had by [...]

  • @ george clooney

Nothing like an internet tough guy……especially when they’re raging against someone’s opinion……sad

  • oh and Botch is better anyways

  • yeah i know im hard as fuck. wasnt really mad at his opinion so much it was mostly at the disrespect i see coming from indie douchholes who think they know enough to talk about a scene they know nothing about. and botch has one really good classic record converge has about 8 so do the math fartface. botch probably loved converge before botch even had a record also.

  • oh and i had we are the romans before it was even released because i saw botch in fuckin 99 probably a good 10 years before your dumb ass even heard of them.

  • oh and brian carnahan your band sucks. why start a band that sounds like 5000 other bands?

  • @george clooney

what’s that they say about assumptions? Oh yeah they’re the mother of all fuckups……I live is Seattle homie so your comment “saw botch in fuckin 99 probably a good 10 years before your dumb ass even heard of them” makes you look even dumber then you already do. Oh but wait, there is more……Botch and Converge both put out their first records (well EP in Botch’s case) the same year ‘94. So again your comment, “botch probably loved converge before botch even had a record,” puts your foot squarely in your mouth. Apparently someone doesn’t know so much about the “scene” they so fiercely defend.

“It is better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt”…….maybe put some thought into this quote…..

  • uhhh you sound pretty high and mighty for someone who is completely wrong. Botch didnt have a legit record out until 97 and didnt put out a record that anyone gave a shit about until 99.

  • do your research. converges first legit record came out in 94. botch put out a “self released casette” as in they werent even signed yet in 94. botch wasnt even on hydrahead until like 98. and they didnt even put out a good album until 99. take your own advice

  • converge definitely had a following in the underground for a couple of years before anyone started even hearing of botch. converge also already had 2 seminal albums out by the year before botch’s seminal album came out

  • @george clooney & gaydilla…….still the fact remains, signed or not both bands put out their first music in 94. So you’re comment “botch probably loved converge before botch even had a record” is FLAT OUT WRONG.

And this might come as a HUGE shock to you but music is subjective…..so unless there is an all mighty music god that pass judgement on all records, statements like “they didn’t even put out a good album until 99,” & “converge also already had 2 seminal albums out by the year before botch’s seminal album came out” is an opinion……as in NOT A FACT. Just like it’s my opinion that Botch IS WAY better then Converge…….Sux to be you if you can’t understand that as I’m sure you live a very angry life, which is pretty evident in your tough guy rant from earlier.

  • @gaydilla (hopefully not a play on JDilla)

“Converge definitely had a following in the underground for a couple of years before anyone started even hearing of botch.” ……….I take it you don’t live in the Northwest or even the West Coast for that matter.

  • dude i love botch and converge. when i said botch probably loved converge before botch even had a record i was just trying to make the point that converge were basically already underground cult heroes be4 botch was popular in the national underground hc scene which is def true my dude honestly it is.

also my statement. they didn’t even put out a good album until 99,” & “converge also already had 2 seminal albums out by the year before botch’s seminal album came out” i stand by these statements

botch’s seminal album is “we are the romans”
converge had 2 classics “when forever comes crashing” and petitioning the empty sky” by the year before we are the romans came out. are you arguing that “we are the romans” is not botch’s seminal album? i personally know for a fact that many many people consider those two converge albums classics among 90’s hc/metal.

also “Converge definitely had a following in the underground for a couple of years before anyone started even hearing of botch” yeah clearly if your from botchs hometown your gonna have heard of them but for everyone else in the national hc community most people im frankly 100% sure heard of converge first.

  • 1) dissing Mastadon
    2) dissing Converge
    3) “Matt Pike remains one of the last guitarists that remain able to compose an interesting guitar solo”

    3 thumbs up. WORD UP.

  • converge is some of the worst/obnoxious crap i’ve heard. i have no desire to listen to 13 different songs being played at once while dino from the flinstones barks high school goth poetry over top. CRAP. eat shit clooney…

  • botch is still better… right?

  • and i think you are hot george clooney… you know so much about dudes in bands… you might be a little gay? right? 10 beers and you might… i love HARDcore:)

  • I don’t think Brian really threw Converge or Mastodon under the bus here.

…and if anything, Botch and Converge are easily in a separate yet similar category than Mastodon and High on FIre.

Converge has just as many crap songs as good songs in their catalog and their fans are evenly split between normal kids and people with rocks in their brains. any time i’ve seen them and their set list favors the crap half, yeah, i’d say they suck live.

and don’t tell me the Coalesce/Converge tour this year isn’t worth getting somewhat excited about. Yeah, I’ll put up with Hardcore morons in Bane shirts who’ve seen Madball 900 times to see it when it comes around.

and Mastodon, their flaky hipster fan-base is killing them faster than their lackluster records and High on Fire keeps putting out consistent shit that doesn’t fit well among some dickfor’s Phoenix Weekend playlist. Mastodon could and should put out something that makes me want to smoke a mountain of pot and put my head through my TV… but they haven’t yet.

and george, you’re an idiot. i don’t care about the scene, let alone the hardcore scene or which kids supported who at what time before whatever became popular. you’re the reason i hate going to shows in my old age. kill yourself.

and now i’m going to go listen to an anthology of dead ends.

  • mastodon at this point has put out a bunch of shitty ass records in my opinion but Remission is honestly an unbelievable album and is definitely a classic in its genre + that record fucking blows high on fire away by a million times. I defy anyone to listen to Remission and not think its not only better than this bullshit but it came out in 2002 and influenced the shit out of this band. The thing thats so hilarious about some of you dumbasses especially the writer dumbass is that yous dont even realize that this fuckin record sounds SOOO influenced by Mastodon its absurd. Mastodon are the fathers of this sound. Listening to Frosthammer it reeks of being influenced by mastodons whole style. The shitty singing part in frosthammer sounds like the shitty singing parts that mastodon eventually starting doing which lead to them being somewhat accessible to people outside of hc/metal Some of these grooves and the drummers fills and the song structures its very similar to Mastodon. The production and the guitar sound also sounds like Mastodon. These were sounds invented by mastodon. Its not because their both metal bands and their both gonna have similar sounds. Also Yeah cool he plays a shitty fucking metal solo who gives a fuck? i stopped giving a fuck about finger tapping and dimebag darrel dicksucking when i was fuckin 11. Converge and Mastodon at their peak are both of a higher artistic caliber than “High on fire” and they both pushed the boundaries and the very genre of music whose roots lie in the early 80s hc movement and before that, punk. anybody worth a dime of knowledge about this music would know that. This guy doesnt know what hes talking about at all. high on fire are retread band pulling the same tricks out of the same tired bag as everyone else who wasnt an innovator in this genre by recycling old ideas and biting an assortment of new ones.

  • and i hope those “hardcore morons in Bane shirts who’ve seen Madball 900″ smell your mark ass a mile away and scissor kick your girlfriend in the mouth

u fucking west coast pussies u wish you had something like this to be a part of in the 90s instead of fucking downset

  • after reading the comments to this review with a morbid curiosity…please gaydilla get a life. you’re putting way to much time into making comments.

  • Woah…That Converge video was fucking painful

  • yeah its painful when a pussy gets fucked

  • Tyler is flat out wrong. and a douchebag.

  • I forgot, are the sadsacks that write for this website imageboard trolls or angsty middle school boys?

  • This review is shit. Brian Carnahan sounds like every other fan boy there is. There is nothing constructive here, you are just singing empty praise. Go write for pitchfork.

  • the saddest day is like stairway to heaven for 90s hardcore kids
