Wierd. Anyone who has heard Euros Childs will use this adjective to describe him. There’s no other way to explain the erotic ambience’s he creates in his smooth melodies, and Son of Euro Child is no exception. This time, he has experimented with synths, and by synths I mean really cheap and old synths he probably bought at a redneck garage sale. And to everyone’s surprise, this is not a bad thing. The magic of Euros Childs is noticeable yet again in this, his most recent effort, available for free download at his website. With songs reminiscent of french chansons that got recorded over a Frank Zappa tape and mixed with a little bit of everything that was good in 20th century music, Son of Euro Child takes you on a trip through bizarre landscapes of crazy synths and welsh accents.

The album opens with an arpeggio played over the aforementioned synths, which quickly turns into the wierdest intro you’ve ever heard. Childs’ humming greets us into a place where logic has died and strangely arousing beats have been created. The short intro derives into Gently All Around, a song that reminds us of slow pop songs of the 60s. The overdubbed vocals set the mood for this crazy musical-acid trip. The following songs have a slightly faster tempo, but still maintain the overall “trippy” ambience. As this playful melodies continue, we arrive at Carrboro, an instrumental song that allows us to fully digest this first part of the album. After this, the wierdness gets even bigger. Track 11 is features a noisey ambience with a heavily detuned piano that seems played without any sense of tempo or structure, then the track turns into a folkish flute with a clapping background. A track that consists almost of a solo piano only and an almost silent synth ambience. In the end, the album turns into a crazy drug-induced accordion backing with childish chanting. And it’s even wierder than you think.

The production is very good, although some flaws are still noticeable. Euros Childs chose to distribute it free over the internet, adding himself to the constantly growing stream of musicians that choose to do so. Even though obviously home-made, the album still delivers a great mix. Overall, Euros Childs manages to achieve an original sound that delves into a complete mindfuck of awesome randomness.
