DEAD, STILL RAD: Sky Saxon 1946 – 2009

Sky Saxon, singer and bassist of L.A.’s legends The Seeds, has joined the big Nuggets comp in the sky. Saxon fell ill last Thursday, but played on Saturday with his new outfit Shapes Have Fangs, regardless. Rock and roll might have killed him but homeboy squeezed out plenty of rad tunes before that happened!
Doctors suspect that he had an “infection of the internal organs”…which we are pretty sure is something they made up to cover their asses or to imply that Sky WENT OFF HARD! Our man Saxon died Thursday morning in St. Davids hospital out of Austin, Texas. Drugs are bummed. He’s up in her room.
Austin360 reports:
Sky’s wife Sabrina Saxon posted news of his passing on Facebook this morning: “Sky has passed over and YaHoWha is waiting for him at the gate. He will soon be home with his Father. I’m so sorry I couldn’t keep him here with us. More later. I’m sorry.”
Sky made doo-wop throughout the early 60’s, under his given name Little Richie Marsh. Saxon formed The Seeds in 1965. They were rad. The first iteration of The Seeds disbanded in 1970, when Sky joined the Source Family, a religious commune in the Hollywood Hills led by a cult leader who liked guns, ladies and big fancy cars that called himself YaHoWha.
The Source Family gave Sky the new name, Sunlight, likely because there were too many Skys on the compound already. Saxon made music in the Yahowha 13 throughout the 70’s. YaHoWha was stoked. Last year a few of us saw The Seeds blow the Yahowha 13 off the stage at the Echoplex… it was bomb.
Most recently Sky was self-releasing music here and being taken advantage of by Billy Corgan. We swear revenge.
Rest easy buddy, you ruled.
