High on Fire -

High on Fire – “Snakes For The Divine”

High on Fire
“Snakes For The Divine”
E1 Music
Back in 2002 at the last More Than Music Festival I saw both Mastodon and High On Fire perform on the same stage, way before anyone gave much of shit about either band. Mastodon played early to a nearly empty room, wowing exactly nobody. Later on, High [...]

Jaguar Love -

Jaguar Love – “Hologram Jams”

Jaguar Love
“Hologram Jams”
Fat Possum
Let’s get one thing straight before anyone gets the flame whips out. This is filthy pop music. There’s none of the tintinnabular prettiness of the Magnetic Fields or kitschy prog-electro of Basement Jaxx… just grimy, noisy pop. To try and press the attack (whether libellous or mere analytic) from the angle of [...]

The Magnetic Fields -

The Magnetic Fields – “Realism”

The Magnetic Fields
“Realism”
Nonesuch
I’ve always been fascinated by the inherent irony in music between instrumentation and lyrics. Admittedly, it’s pretty rare but when you find it, its like a bell has been struck and you think “This is why I keep coming back to pop music.” Prince takes a swing at it occasionally (All the Critics [...]

Imperial China -

Imperial China – “Phosphenes”

Imperial China
“Phosphenes”
(Sockets/Ruffian)
Imperial China has a good thing going.  Hailing from the same Washington, D.C. scene that once upon a time produced more original and amazing bands per capita than almost any other city in the U.S., these three dudes capture the feel and the spirit of the “D.C. sound” – which many can recognize but [...]

Lights -

Lights – “Rites”

Lights
“Rites”
Drag CIty
What is there to say about lights? Three chicks with instruments.  A properly grooving rhythm section with the bass practically oozing out your speakers. A couple of trendy effects pedals. Tie-dye the whole trip with a fuzzed out stoner vibe and what do you get? The best after party soundtrack you or any of [...]

Dios -

Dios – “We Are Dios”

Dios
“We Are Dios”
Buddyhead
Editors note: We normally don’t review our own records, it’s just kinda tacky. But every now and then we break a rule and this time around we happened to get sent this review below by one of our readers and we liked it so much that we couldn’t let it go unpublished. The [...]

If you are looking for an honest, no holds barred opinion, send Buddyhead your stuff to the address below. We'll tackle any genre of music. Even Canadian-polka. Besides music, we'll also review your movie, short film, video game, clothing line, skateboard, marijuana, little sister, big sister, mom etc. Our address is below. Oh, and if you send us those tight-ass crappy promos without artwork or jewel cases, you'll be getting off to a bad start with us. The reason being is that it makes it harder for us to get any cash for it at the record store. So if you wanna get on our good side, and better your chances of a good review, send us the real shit poppa. If we fucked up your favorite band (or your band) and you'd like to whine about our reviews, like the masses of other crybabies, or even praise them, email us at buddyhead@buddyhead.com.

We're looking for some new blood too, so if you think you've got what it takes to be a part of the Buddyhead music reviewing team, email that same address with at least three examples of your previous record reviewing work (or make some shit up real quick like). And just like always, the reviews below do not necessarily reflect the opinion of Buddyhead as a whole. Buddyhead's reviews are written however we want them to cos we make the rules, and occasionally they are completely biased. But that's why you read them anyway, so don't be stupid and start crying. Thanks shhhmanky.
