So a while back my first Medication Buddyhead music-blog post was about a band called Les Trois Malheures. Well finally we went through the vaults and contacted the band members and released their lost EP on iTunes! We being me and my friend Håkan who have a label called Carcrash Records. Les Trois Malheures was one of our favorite DC bands ever that scoured the scene for a short time with their discordant and energetic post-punk. A band that was breaking at the seams before it even set sail which left a legacy of bombastic shows and songs that stand the test of time today. To make even the most jaded punk lost in the digital ocean to pump his/her virtual fist yet again. We put it up on iTunes for the punk price of $3.99!
Frodus/The Cassettes nerds take note that Les Trois Malheures was fronted by Jonathan Kreinik, producer for “Conglomerate International” and countless Frodus singles as well as the recent Cassettes album “‘Neath The Pale Moon” and albums by Trans Am, Supersystem, and more… We fondly remember the times when L3M played dark basements and lurked amongst smokey locales. Mr. Krenik has recently been seen as the soundman for The Rapture for the past 2 years and before that he worked with Le Tigre… he’s an organized troublemaker that is to be reckoned with when it comes to the bottle or bass compression. An excerpt from his email about the band:
“The only other real recording of us was done with Craig Gates at Boombox Magnetica version 3, Kansas house, probably with fewer mics than the other one. I think I ran the whole mix through this stereo tuner that had a cool loudness button, but only output in mono, so the orig mixes of those were in mono. Ann used my fender amp and I used some gibson transistor amp that got left in our basement, so the whole thing sounded really weird and Joy Division-y. The version of …Titanic… on here I’m pretty sure was done on the Trident @ National Recording Studio because the Boombox eventually lived there up until Tim Schmieder stole my speakers and stands and mic cables and I sold Nikhil the Otari for a bag of weed and $700. ”
I may post some more here at the NEW AND IMPROVED Buddyhead blog but I listen to lots of nerdy instrumental electronic music (see my last.fm: http://www.last.fm/user/triobelisk/) that Travis doesn’t really like. And since playing guitar in bands for 10+ years along with being surrounded by guitar nerds (see: myspace.com/darkesthour) I tend to not listen to lots of guitar rock and Travis always beats me to the punch when it comes to Britpop… damn! Anyway, enjoy Les Trois Malheures! You can download their tune “I Am The Greatest” at http://myspace.com/carcrashrecords.
The Warlocks have a new record out on Tee Pee Records called “Heavy Deavy Skull Lover”, which although I’m not crazy about it… it’s a good record you should buy. I know you kids today don’t know what the fuck that means, but I suggest trying it. It’s a rush that’s similar to a whippit, but i think it kills less brain cells. As for this band… I can’t help but miss the days when these guys were just shooting to be LA’s Spacemen 3, with good songs like “Shake The Dope Out”, “Baby Blue” and “Cosmic Letdown” (all on “Phoenix”). I’m not really sure what they’re trying to be now aside from sounding a lil’ high. I also feel like their song-writing has taken a backseat to some jams on this new record. Either way you slice it, I like the old shit better, but I’m still backing the new shit. The old shit is a killer blowjob but the new stuff is a hand job from a girl way out of your league. Got it? Do yourself a favor and check out The Warlocks new song “So Paranoid” below, maybe try buying the record (trying new things is good), watch the videos of the old jams I like, go see em live when they roll through your shitbox town (hopefully with Darker My Love) on tour and yell “PLAY THE HEAVY SHIT FOR ANGRY JESUS PUSSIES!” for me. They’ll be stoked, I promise.

Githead is Collin Newman’s side project. You remember Collin from a small band called Wire, right? I fuckin’ hope you do. Speaking of Wire, they’ve got a new “Read & Burn 3″ EP coming out reeeeeaaaaal soon that I’m super stoked to hear. The first two “Read & Burn” EPs and the “Send” record they put out SLAYED! Prolly my favorite Wire records to date actually. Anyways, back to Githead. It’s a bit different from Wire, it’s a bit more “groove based” and has a little funk in it. Sorry that description stunk worse than the shit I took this morning… But, trust me… it’s good. I wasn’t into the first EP they put out but this full length is pretty killer. You can buy all things Wire & Githead (among other cool things) @ http://posteverything.com/. The message is DO IT!
P.s. If you’re in LA this weekend I’m DJing The Polyphonic Spree show @ the Henry Fonda tonight, IAMX @ The El Rey tomorrow & The Shout Out Louds @ The Fonda on Monday (fuck you, I know that’s not the weekend anymore). Kisses
I’m way into this whole “bands giving away their music for free” thing. Today you can add The Verve to that list because they released a new jam via the NME.com titled “The Thaw Sessions”, which is prolly a reference to ‘Deep Freeze’ (that was a bonus track on their last album ‘Urban Hymns’). It’s a little over 14 minutes long, which is why I called it a “jam”, and sounds more like the first two records than it does their last one…. which is fuckin’ the right direction for these blokes if you ask me. Can’t wait to hear more. Get into it! The word on the street is we’ll see these dudes live at Coachella in 2008. Now if they could only lock down Oasis for that gig as well…
This U2 bootleg has not left my stereo for the past few weeks. And that’s because theis thing fuckin’ slays! It’s from the Zoo TV tour (I think) but 90% of the songs they play are from their “Achtung Baby” record (which just so happens to be my favorite U2 record cuz it’s the darkest and the most fucked up). I don’t know much about this bootleg, but I’m gonna guess the band made it cuz of the interludes and interviews included with it. Anyone know the skinny on this bad boy? Download a few songs or the whole thing as a zip file… It’s all about choices dude. Have it your way, like Burger King.
This came out back in May of 1998 and features “Birthday” off the “Munki” record as well as the b-side “Hide Myself” which is only on this slab of vinyl. It’ll prolly be on the 4xCD boxset these grumpy old men are putting out in February next year on Rhino called “The Power Of Negative Thinking: B-Sides and Rarities”. Can’t wait for that little fucker. JAMC are playing the Wiltern on October 23rd with Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, should be killer. You can buy tickets HERE.
We are very excited to announced we have signed a new band to the Buddyhead family from Denver, Colorado called Moccasin (formerly Nightingale). Check out their website @ http://moccasinmusic.com/ and their myspace page @ http://www.myspace.com/moccasinmyspace. And make sure to download a couple free mp3s from their website, “Ezra’s Ghost” and “Tudor Moon”. You can also buy their “Last Leaf” EP on Itunes (which contains both of those jams) by clicking here. The band also has a split vinyl release with LA’s Darker My Love coming out and a west coast tour very soon. We will keep you posted on those details. In the meantime, read up on Moccasin in Spin Magazine from back in May by clicking here.
