What part of “pretend it never happened” did you not understand?

March 17th, 2008 by Meathead

Teabagging For BeginnersWow, I wasn’t expecting my half-assed Phil Collins write-up to stir up such a heated debate.  Honestly, my only true beef with that particular video, besides the fact that the song sucks, is that no matter which way you look at it, be it from the point of view of the band or that of the person who thinks Phil Collins sucks, there is a gaping hole in the logic that simply can’t be ignored.  From the band’s perspective, they’ve played all their shitty songs that nobody wants to hear, then closing with their one “good” song.  Who the hell does that?  Seriously, open with your good song(s), then by the time you get to your shittier stuff, hopefully everyone will be too drunk to care.  Looking at it the other way, one must wonder why they are actually playing something cool at the opening of the video, then immediately launch into an orgy of 80’s synth-pop bullshit.  It’s pretty much a lose-lose situation.

Anyway, enough about that.   I want to talk about something else that’s equally inconsequential and will inevitably piss off most of Buddyhead’s readers who would rather read about Travis’ aventures in homelessness or whatever.

I like David Lynch’s stuff.  Some people think he tries too hard to be weird simply for the sake of being weird, but to me, he seems like a guy who is genuinely on his own planet.  He does whatever the fuck he wants, and if you don’t like it, that’s your problem.  He’s a master of creating situations that can be simultaneously creepy, tense, and sometimes hilarious.  Not to mention downright terrifying, as seen in this particular scene from Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me that still scares the ever-loving shit out of me even after seeing it hundreds of times:

That being said, the purpose of this isn’t to simply talk about how cool David Lynch is.  I want to talk about Sesame Street.

Anyone reading this who grew up in the 70’s and/or 80’s most likely watched Sesame Street.  I know I sure did.  Man, I watched the hell out of that show.   My favorite regular character was probably Oscar the Grouch, as I felt (and still do) that I could truly relate to him on a deeper personal level than I could with the others.  I was also a fan of the Yip Yip aliens, who would beam themselves down to Earth and become fascinated by rotary phones and Apple II computers and shit.  Big Bird was an annoying little bitch, though.  Never cared for him.

Now, I know it seems like I just made a hairpin turn from one topic to another for no particular reason, and to be fair, I do do that on occasion, just because I’m a dick.  But this time I actually have a reason.  I guess I missed this when it originally aired, but Sesame Street actually paid an homage to Twin Peaks at one point, with Cookie Monster playing Kyle MacLachlan’s part.  While the bit is pretty innocuous in and of itself (there’s no murder or incestuous rape, unfortunately), when you consider what it’s based on, including the above clip, it’s pretty fucking weird.  Please enjoy.

Roky Erickson @ The El Rey Tonight!

October 28th, 2007 by Travis Keller

Hey Kids, this is borderline short-notice, if you happen to find yourself in Los Angeles tonight (Sunday October, 28th 2007) get it together champ and come on down to The El Rey Theatre and see Roky Erickson! And if you wanna kill two birds with one stone by buying me a beer at the same time, tonight is your night cuz I’ll be DJing some sweet rock n’ roll tunes before as well as between the bands (1990’s are also playing). I’ve been a pretty immersed fan of Mr. Erickson for a while now, so I’m really fuckin’ excited to see homeboy play to say the least. And my fingers are crossed that “Night Of The Vampire” is part of tonight’s set. Don’t fuck me on that dude… play it!

For those of you who haven’t already seen the rockumentary titled “You’re Gonna Miss Me”, I highly recommend doing so cuz I think it’s one of the best films ever made about rock n’ roll (aside from that sweet movie Marky Mark made called Rockstar). The film covers everything in Roky’s bizarre life including his personal battles with drug addiction (heroin and LSD binges), mental illness (struggles with schizophrenia), music “career” (including the 13th Floor Elevators), stays at Austin State Hospital and Rusk State Hospital for the Criminally Insane and his eventual recovery and return to performing music. It’s a good one dudes, trust me. Buy or borrow or rent or netflix or steal or whatever that DVD.

The Black Heart Procession - “The Spell”

March 20th, 2006 by Travis Keller

I really liked the first three records from San Diego’s The Black Heart Procession (which were cleverly titled "one", "two" and "three") because they were dark, moody, depressing at times and most importantly… unique sounding. But when they put their last record out, "Amore Del Tropico", it seemed a little too much on the happy side of things for them. I figured the sun, the surf culture or just the lameness that is Sandy Gaygo had finally gotten to them or something. But with this new pack of jams, called "The Spell", it sounds like these dudes have returned from spring break and are back to their old dark and gloomy ways! I’ve only listen to this record once (so I can’t really gage exactly how good it is yet or if I’m even diggin’ on it) but I figured some of you out there would be curious to hear what Black Heart has come up with after a four year break since their last sunny release. So here’s the song I picked to post here… mainly because the drums sounded cool. Also, check out "Three Mile Pilot" (homeboy’s band before this and who are also working on a new album due out next spring) if you start getting down with everything Black Heart…

C.AARMÉ - “Visions”

May 8th, 2005 by Das Shelbot

Caarme2You can read about this band if you scroll down where I did a formal "first post" about these weird Swedes! Frantic and dangerous punk ala Black Flag, Bad Brains, and Born Against from weird Swedes that never really listened to those bands! Small town frustrations translated to the world stage with a swift kick to your laptop screen. This is just too good… I would post the whole album if I could. I listened to this today loud in my car and remembered my comrade J. Kreinik telling me that when he is on a plane that is hitting turbulence he blasts C.AARME and clenches the armrests!!! Now I want to do that!! Go trade in a bunch of those records that were marketed to you as "punk" and buy the first C.AARME right now! Turn up the beards!
