Buddyhead Records was an independent record label that sprouted and grew as an extension of this website, which was launched on the internet when Travis moved to Los Angeles, California in the summer 1997. The label itself was born on February 25, 2000 because we were really bored… and also because we felt there was a slew of bands and artists that deserved greater attention than they were receiving. The idea was to illuminate good art and make ourselves laugh once in a while too. The record label evolved as an extension of that same spirit that was on the website, to actually release the music we thought deserved attention and that nobody else would touch anyway. Buddyhead Records released its last record on February 16th, 2010.
In its ten years of existence, Buddyhead released records by various bands such as: Ink & Dagger, Text, At The Drive-In, Murder City Devils, Dios, The Cassettes, Moccasin, Wires On Fire, Radio Vago, Your Enemies Friends, The Mean Reds, 400 Blows, The Cassettes, SHAT, The Dillinger Escape Plan, The Icarus Line, Burning Brides, The PoPo, Modwheelmood and others. We also put out a few compilations that featured the likes of Primal Scream, Mudhoney, Iggy Pop, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Wire, The Dwarves, Dead Meadow, Le Tigre, TV on the Radio, The Jesus Lizard, Atari Teenage Riot, Singapore Sling, Turbonegro, The Locust, The Evaporators, The Starvations, Enon, Decahedron, Bluebird, Beehive & The Barracudas, British Sea Power, The Fiery Furnaces, Cave In and Weezer.
Many of the bands that were on Buddyhead got their records back in 2010 (so check out their websites for exciting new re-releases of those records – we’ll do our best to link to them as they pop up) and we are keeping a barebones catalog of some of our first releases like Ink & Dagger and Text. We have new plans on the horizon and new partnerships with friends for new record label adventures. Stay tuned for more information and links as they become available.
Thanks,
The ‘Head
