Boomsnake – “Re/Visions”

Boomsnake
“Re/Visions”
(Grizzly Records; 2010)

Boomsnake indeed… I feel disgruntled and cheated. The only reason I decided to review this particular record over a plethora of other (probably better) ones was the awesome title. Think about it. Boomsnake. Boom. Snake. Its a combination of the phallic and the destructive. Essentially, that’s a giant Godzilla cock rampaging through the city on a path of wanton destruction. Simple too, barely dual-syllabic. It’s the perfect moniker for every adolescent fuckromp fantasy. But of course, nobody that cool could be bothered to think of or trademark the name. So these jokers grabbed it, straddled their echoed-up acoustic guitars and boarded the first train to Suckville. It doesn’t even matter that straddling a guitar as a vehicle negates the need to board a train. Christ, what are you the fucking metaphor police? Jesus…

But enough of this pseudo-Freudian bullshit, the long and the short of it is that the record is subpar, for these reasons:

  1. The singer is such a blatant Thom York rip that the limey is almost justified in hunting the fucker down and ripping out his larynx on the grounds of copyright infringement. I mean, this guys schtick is so precisely modelled on his hero’s vocal contours, he makes Matthew Bellamy’s vocal style sound original and interesting. Listen junior, ever heard the term ‘find your own voice’? This applies literally!
  2. What? The drummer is ripping off Phil Selway? And the guitarist sounds like a bored Johnny Greenwood? I’m picking up on a theme, guys…
  3. Heavy drums no distortion? Come on dude, if you didn’t play in a band called Television in the late 70’s, this is a no go! Either ditch the skinbasher and pick up acoustic guitars OR TURN IT UP.
  4. Finally, the songs just kinda… I’d say blend but it’s just not caustic enough. Put it this way… think of all your least favourite icecream flavours. Mint, praline maybe? All those crappy sorbet flavours that look like the Gay Pride flag when they’re together? Yeah, well, mix them all together and then take a leak in it. Now mentally convert this into a sonic texture and you’ve got the unrapturous homogeny that this record dishes out more or less consistently. Ok maybe there’s a little nugget of chocolate at the song ‘Sticks, Stones and Animal Bones’ That ones kinda’ cool. Credit where credit is due.

I will also fang them this bone: their artwork is the bombdiggety. Stereos turning into vital organs and shit? Fuck yeah! But alas, most of the tunes still huff donkey dong so do yourself a favour: go out and buy that ‘In Rainbows’ B-side album. Boomsnake indeed…

  • i like them

  • you know the singer of muse’s full name! nerd!

  • Ah but so do you…

  • who the fuck wrote this. what a tool. i’d love to hear his music. critics like this need to do a little less masturbating in the shower while dreaming of becoming someone important, and learn to actually produce something beneficial in this world. a critique like this makes me glad i’m doing something with my life. Alex Eld-bitch, move out of your parents’ and get a life, you pathetic loser!

  • boomsnake rullez

  • I like Gabe’s voice

  • This review is terrible. You should learn to actually describe the music, instead of just hoping that your writing style will save yourself. It doesn’t. You come off sounding biased, ignorant and unprofessional. You never gave any positive comments about the music, other than how one song is “kinda cool.” What’s cool about it? Why is it different from the other songs?

You also just sound like you really have no idea what you’re talking about when it comes to music. Are you familiar at all with songwriting or music theory? No joke, you sound like an uncultured thirteen year-old.

All that said, you are a total bag. Keep your day job.

  • I also hate this record. It sucks. what makes it even worse is that the songs are re-done songs off of their debut full length “give and take”, which I liked a lot. Give and take was mainly drums and guitars, not a bunch of shitty, weird sounds and I thought it was a great record.

TIP: all because it sounds like shit, does not make it art.

  • this record rules, and is free on their website, fyi

“Are you familiar at all with songwriting or music theory? No joke, you sound like an uncultured thirteen year-old.”

“ahh man when the drummer switches over from that crazy waltzing 3/4 time sig to the mind-blowing 7/4 up-beat!… i need to change my pants!! OH BRO i’m totally stoked on that subtle application of the aeolian mode marimba ambience in the backround. i love pitchfork media!”

    less culture, more rock, dork.

  • @Jack

Ha! “Less culture, more rock.” You’re an idiot.

I agree with Trevor that this guy sounds like he has no idea what he’s talking about.

By the way, Pitchfork sucks too, loser. This reviewer should try and get a job there. Cleaning toilets or something.

  • @will and @jack AND @trevor

jack i totally agree with you, if it sounds good, it sounds good. if it doesnt, it doesnt. who gives a shit about theory?

  • fucking boring ass music.

  • like your style, eldridge.

  • “music” to me should be an entirely intuitive thing, especially in the case of rock music. TO ME its more about attitude honesty and saying what has to be said and the feeling behind it instead of the sciences theories and well… all the pretentious bullshit that you fuckin’ turds kling to in order to feel like you’ve spent enough time shoving music books up your ass, sipping chambuca tea sitting cross-legged schoffing and the REAL people are actually willing to get their jeans dirty.

i’ve got all the culture i need and i don’t need a label on myself to prove it, DORK!

  • Thanks Ted. I like your name.

  • “You come off sounding biased, ignorant and unprofessional. You never gave any positive comments about the music, other than how one song is “kinda cool.” What’s cool about it? Why is it different from the other songs?”

Dude, these aren’t at all his failings. Think about where you are on the internet.

This kid’s failing is that he’s just not funny. No bulleted list or use of the word “bombdiggety” will make up for that shit.

  • Pantytime!!!

  • Oh I’m glad someone picked up on the bombdiggety. I knew there would be somebody out there who would call me out as douchebgag using it. Well spotted joey.

  • thanks bud. though i gotta make it clear that i don’t mean to be a hater for the sake of hating. not trying to get you down, just speaking the mind.

Trevor. Your an ass hole. This guy can at least muster in a few technical words.

All i have to say is SUCK A FAT ONE!

  • Alex, you’re a funny dude. Keep speaking your mind when you write. As far as your haters go, I think maybe they miss the fact that you get really jaded by listening to records and trying to review them. I’m not making excuses, just stating a different perspective. Music is so often regurgitated that its easy to pick out when one band sounds like their idols.

BTW, in your list under #1, you referred to “heroes vocal contours” rather than “hero’s vocal contours” as it should be. Sorry, just addressing a pet peeve of mine.

  • Yeah, actually, I’ve been meaning to correct that. I’ll do it now. Cheers for the compliment, man. Gotta keep myself entertained too huh?

  • While I do not agree with the reviewer, the most telling fact of this entire post is that the reviewer chose to review Boomsnake. While he/she may have not enjoyed they’re music and wants to describe them with cliches and references to Radiohead, the fact that he sat and wrote about them is a plug that shows that even in a non-fan’s mind Boomsnake is at least worthy of criticism. That’s a compliment.

Spelling and grammar are all just witty digs at others based on the overarching truth that different people have different tastes. Stick to the music.

Boomsnake makes me feel happy. Read Gabe’s review by Submerge Magazine.
