Big Four Tour 2010: Metallica, Slayer, Anthrax and Megadeth!

So we’re about to turn into the next decade of the millennium and all the kids are into what their parents were into a quarter-century ago! Dressing exactly like they did and in many cases newer bands are sounding exactly like certain older bands, I just can’t dig on that. I read the announcement that Metallica, Slayer, Anthrax and Megadeth will tour together early next year in Europe. Collectively, they were known as the Big Four of Thrash Metal. But, 25 years after the fact, it’s interesting to see where each of those bands’ careers have taken them. Obviously, Metallica became the biggest metal band in the world, but not without some bumps along the way. Namely, alienating fans with the Napster thing and PUTTING OUT WACK RECORDS! Slayer have stuck to their story and have been the most consistent of the Big Four. I’ve never seen a bad Slayer show. I saw them hand Marilyn Manson their ass last summer and the summer before that when they toured together. 1st time I saw Metallica, Lars was dropping beats left and right and did it again the 2nd time. Weak. Anthrax was always good (in fact, it was because of them, I wanted to be in a band) even when they played at the Whisky and I saw Metallica suck just 2 weeks earlier. Which brings me to Megadeth, or as I know it, the Dave Mustaine Band. They were the 1st band to drop off my radar and it wasn’t until recently that I started to revisit their earlier stuff. Peace Sells is really good, but it also came out the same year as Master Of Puppets and Reign In Blood. So, it got pushed aside in my tape collection. Now, the Big Four Tour looms in the near future and I’m a bit torn. On one hand, the fanboy in me got an instant musical boner with the possibility of seeing the best of the best on one stage . But the reality is, 1. I’d have to spend a grip of money to see this happen. 2. I’m about to see Slayer and Megadeth (with Testament) next month. 3. With all the guys in the bands pushing 50, this may be the only time this will ever happen. It is here that I’m reminded that there is going to be a point in the near future when there will be no more of these bands. It’s one thing for Charlie Watts to get through a Rolling Stones set, but for Dave Lombardo to get through a Slayer set is something completely different. Shit, it’s rough to get through a Slayer set in the audience! Whether I can make the trek to Europe or not, the fact that the Big Four tour is going to happen is pretty fucking special. Mosh it up!

  • Metallica is by far the best of the 4. I have never been dissappointed at a Metallica show in the 12 times I have seen them. Who doesn’t mess up. Slayer is hardly bankable. Megadeth is a bunch of fill in muscicians, Anthrax? What have they done for me lately….

Metallica is the most talented out of the four and by your own words, the biggest heavy metal band in the world. If they sucked so much, why do they sell out most shows.. 150,000 at one show this past fall..

  • I think it’s just two days that Metallica’s tour intersects with the tour the other three are on, not really a full tour.

  • shon is using the worthington law from mr. show. the more you make the better you are. einstein etc. was a moron because he didnt make a lot of money right? what the fuck does “hardly bankable” mean? this isnt fucking sports. you dont base good bands off of statistics and who makes the hall of fame. the grease soundtrack is one of the greatest records ever right? it must be based off of your theory of how much they sell out and records they sell. metallica has not done anything relevant in over 20 years. load/re load/that garageband ep shit they re did with a fuckin bob seger song. mission impossible 2 soundtrack? fuck off, you are having a laugh if you think they are that great. give me metallica in the 80’s and i’ll agree with you somewhat but they wear clown shoes now and clown makeup as well. hitler sold out all his shows and rallies and from what i remember he was a pretty horrible person. nickleback sells tons of records and sells out shows so therefore they are probably one of the best bands out today right? glad we cleared that all up.

  • Spot-on in claiming Slayer have been the most consistent of the Big Four. Metallica has put out more garbage than the other 3 combined, and their latest effort was too little too late.

Who doesn’t mess up? Someone charging a fucking arm and a leg to fans who come and watch them perform night after night. That’s who.

  • why cant TITANNICA reunite for this tour?

  • well metallica have a poop drummer but he plays his heart out and hetfield has an awesome charisma/persona etc they wrote 3 maybe 4 great records and cashed in during the 90’s.
i seen em 3 times and they were great every time. by the way, justice for all…is their best record and i think they should remaster it WITH a bass track and snare drum instead of a wet yellow pages.
anthrax were ok. i loved killer beas for some reason an 8 year old can only fathom and slayer are easily the most consistent and noble of the 4.
    megadeth are ananoidal rubbish.

  • SLAYER!

  • Cliff Burton rolled over in his grave for every Metallica album that ever came out in the aftermath of his death, with the exception of “And Justice for All.” Anthrax is solely responsible for the creation of rap metal, and other shitty 3rd generation bands inspired by that noise pollution, such as Limp Bizkit. Megadeth, well they compensate for anything that may be deemed lackluster in their repertoire with integrity. And Slayer, well they just plain FUCKIN’ ROCK!!!

  • Will the 80s ever be fuckin’ over?

Present-day Metallica is a dysfunctional family, with Hetfield as the reformed alcoholic dad who’s now embraced recovery and likes to talk about his feelings; Ulrich as the narcissistic mom who constantly competes with, and is tremendously jealous of, her own husband; Hammett as the teenage kid (I leave it to you whether he’s the son or the daughter) who tries to make everyone get along, and fails; and Trujillo as the toddler who doesn’t know or care what’s going on.

Metallica- what will it take to make you guys feel like winners? Solid gold toilets? Metallicushmore? A billion billion hugs? Please stop acting like insecure overpaid loons, it’s time to stop the madness.

    Anthrax and Megadeth? Meh.

    Slayer? What PeteFresh said.

  • T O O L

  • All of these bands except for Slayer have basically sucked since about 87 or so.

  • Hmm the tour we all want yet bitch about at the same time. Just Enjoy it if you go. These bands have all influenced each other and crossed paths so many times why not have a few shows together!

  • The big four together..wow, I thought I would never see that. Lets be honest if you judge them by the thrash qualification..metalica is probably the worse of them, and Slayer/Megadeth origins are the best. Metallica is just a comercial band and megadeth is close to that nowadays(shame).

  • Well now that American Carnage got postponed, I hope they scrap it completely, have Testament open, and let all us Carnage ticket holders get first dibs. To miss this would be stupid, no matter how jaded you are.

  • I´m glad to read that almost everyone knows that slayer was is and will be the best trash metal band, i cant even tell that metallica´s new songs are trash metal.

Slayer will be the best band for the end of days.

    1-Slayer
    2-Megadeth
    3-Metallica
    4-Anthrax
