ALMIGHTY DEFENDERS: “The King Khan & BBQ & Black Lips Show”

l_170b82d1050d4d1f8db610a0fbeb0472

Not to be outdone in the summer of shitty supergroups, King Khan, Mark Sultan and the Black Lips have come together in the Almighty Defenders. Here’s what Vice had to say:

When the Black Lips had to flee India after almost getting arrested (long story) and getting their passports confiscated (longer story), they fled to Berlin to hole up with their old pal and label-mate King Khan. Mark Sultan (aka BBQ, one half of King Khan & BBQ Show) also happened to be there, and it happened to be freezing in Berlin that week so no one really wanted to leave the house. So what do a bunch of garage-rock all-stars (and international refugees) do in the middle of winter in cramped conditions? They give birth to an album and band of the same name, The Almighty Defenders. The guys went to Moon Studios and recorded these tracks, brimming with soul, earnest shouts, cries and hand-claps over post-modern gospel-rock anthems.

This album is being released on LP and digitally on Vice Records on September 22nd

“Post-modern-gospel-rock.” Yeah, this won’t end well.

Gospel singer and son-of-a-pastor, Jared Swilley, calls the Almighty Defenders first release an “evil gospel” album with songs about “beating up God.” And boy is Pastor Swilley gonna be pissed that his son has gotten into choir robes, fruitcake-hopping, and songs too-hot-for-the-Bible. God is just gonna be angry at how bad it sucks:

We hope this is more than an on-the-nose joke, taken waaaay too far between hillbilly and Canadian superfriends. Unfortunately, the very-bad-and-not-very-gospel video above doesn’t inspire faith.

It’s probably too late to stop this train from wrecking, but if the Almighty Defenders stop trying so hard, their anti-gospel-made-by-skeezy-gospel-fans gimmick might actually be ironic. And if Mark Sultan sings and King Khan plays guitar, the Almighty Defenders might actually be good.

We’ll suspend judgment here. No official cuts have been released and both bands in question do good work. Maybe this will be the first supergroup to do likewise.

Whether the Almighty Defenders prove another case of too many fags in the kitchen cooking a faggot meal, or a kinda rad practical joke by otherwise good musicians, we’ll give it a chance on September 22nd.

Or we’ll just put on the Oblivians’ Play Nine Songs With Mr. Quintron and get really drunk. Which is how the Almighty Defenders probably happened.

  • Dude, it’s not that bad.

  • Wow! Nothing like someone powertripping in print! Personal vendetta? My friend went to that show and said it was fun but fucked. I don’t think they practiced. The sound sucks, too. So what?

  • Vendetta? Nah. Like I said, I like both of the bands in this group. I even take crap for that on here. The jokes above are just that.

But if I’m gonna nuke the bands I hate, I should also be honest when the bands I like step out of line. And this is just really silly. I am still witholding judgment, but more than the sound sucks in that video.

Don’t take it so seriously, homie.

  • Hey, that is my video. If you think the sound sucks you have no idea. It was a small miracle to get sound as good as we got.

There are two other videos up too if you aren’t so into this one. I think they are pretty damned good for how rowdy that place was that evening

    thanks for posting them anwyway

  • This is off a soundboard or something right? I think it sounds fine even with no bassguitar sound. If Chip’s favorite bands like Deerhunter and Alien Ant Farm were also taped through a board it would sound weird I think. For a band’s first show it is fine. I don’t think you are joking and that is ok but I wish I was there. I will buy the album. To each their own.

  • no it sucked.

  • i agree there is very little bass in the mix which is pretty unfortunate

  • sorry, i just had to come back to say….you know what? these are strictly fan made videos. we showed up to film this show because we wanted to. because it’s fun. no money nor would we want it. take it or leave if fuckers

  • no stress dude. glad someone got to film it.

  • Yeah, relax graeme. No one has criticized your shooting. Just stick some directional mics on the cameras and you’ll be fine.
