WATCH: Devendra Banhart’s Psychedelic Video For Taurobolium
So I’m not really a huge fan of Devendra Banhart, and don’t even get me started on his name. His recorded music is all right I guess. But have you ever seen the dude live? I only saw him once and it was a total bummer. Just a bunch of never-ending hippie jam band crap. And this is coming from someone who actually likes the Grateful Dead (yeah, yeah).
But his new video for Mala’s “Taurobolium” is fucking awesome. Created by Galen Pehrson, the video features the music of Bernhardt and depicts a couple of messed up ducks wandering around a strangely accurate animated portrayal of Hollywood.
Besides the obvious visual references to Hollywood, the film embodies the actual feeling of what it’s like to live here. Of what it’s like to be at the big party, with all the famous people, the underground, the wannabes, the hangers on and the like that pretty much make up the scene. And the allusion to the bullshit that we all pretend we’re not a part of but really are – because it’s inescapable.
You can’t quite put your finger on what exactly is makes the depiction so accurate, but you know it’s there, and it’s visceral. Kinda like what the truth feels like when someone is telling you a lie.
Anyway, Rose McGowen’s makes a voice-over cameo which is cool, and I’ll probably be digging out some of Banhart’s old stuff because you don’t just come out with something like this after years of bullshit.
