There’s only been a few performers I’ve seen that have totally blown me away and Elliott Smith is for sures one of em. When he was on, HE WAS FUCKIN’ ON! Then again when he was off (or high) he was off. There was no middle ground with him, it was either totally amazing or heart wrenching depressing. The photo above is from Yo-Yo-A-Go-Go in Olympia, WA way back in 1999. My friend Marko and I drove up from LA, got there and it was sold out. Only to meet Elliott Smith (who was wearing a hat that said “Who’s The Boss?”) in the alley who put us on the list because “he had two guest spots but no friends”. After finishing his cigarette, we followed him inside (where he proceeded to ask several people “Who’s The Boss?” – to which they all replied “You Are Elliott!”) and he sat me on the edge of the stage where I snapped the photo above. Damn, I sure fucking miss you Elliott. Can’t believe it’s almost been ten years since you’ve been around! Oct. 21 marks the 10th anniversary of his death.
Anyhow, Tony Lash (who played drums in Elliott’s band Heatmiser) posted a Heatmiser version of Smith’s “Christian Brothers,” a track released in solo form on 1995′s record “Elliott Smith”.

And while we’re on the topic of Elliott, here’s my favorite song of his. Yes, you can do it better by yourself Elliott. Props.
