The Exquisite Tenderness of Santa Rosa de Lima
SANTA ROSA DE LIMA – ABOUT THE FILM IN PREPRODUCTION from Burke Roberts on Vimeo.
THE PROJECT:
This ambitious Labor of love from a seriously talented team of film professionals will be a highly stylized art film about the true-life experience of Santa Rosa, the first Saint of the Americas. Known as ‘The Rose of Lima’, this incredibly interesting woman was born in 16th century Peru, and was blessed/cursed with ecstatic Biblical visions from an early age.
Exploring her magical world from her point of view, this project will be a visually hypnotic rollercoaster of darkness and light – both in its imagery and emotional anatomy – that depicts the extreme nature of her life for the first time in cinematic history.
Rosa spent the majority of her life in solitude, praying and practicing extreme self-mortification out of her devotion to Christ – who was very much a living lover in her perception. We are approaching this abstract love story in the spirit of a Fantasy/Sci-Fi journey between dimensions: devising epic interpretations of her documented visions, miracles and masochistic practices. The piece aspires to examine neither her psychology nor the mythology, but rather the core metaphysical commitment of Love and its duality to a less defined and deeper concept of ‘God.’
Our film stems from a larger academic thesis examining the astounding details of Rosa’s life in relation to the broader psychedelic experience of mystics throughout history.
Falling into the unique cinematic genre as works from such conceptualists as Alejandro Jodorowsky, Luis Bunuel, Fritz Lang, Maya Deren, Peter Greenaway, Carl Theodore Dreyer, Ken Russell and more recently Matthew Barney, this piece is bound for esteemed museums, galleries, fine art fairs and film festivals around the world.
THE CREW:
Internationally recognized art film director Burke Roberts (see links below) has been commissioned to write and direct this powerful and challenging realization of Santa Rosa by the foremost dedicated academics of this new thesis.
Halo Cyan Records label owner and Academic scholar, Dimitri Fergadis, who has done extensive work on mysticism in the philosophy department of The New School for Social Research in New York City, aided by the principal hagiographic texts about Santa Rosa found the inspiration to executive produce this film in new translations of the Latin texts that have been studied and qualified by renowned authors and historians.
The project is being produced by Brooklyn Reptyle Films’ Roger M. Mayer (founder of both Silver Lake and Downtown L.A. Film Festivals) and Christo Dimassis with whom they have produced multiple feature films including Sundance selections BIG RIVER MAN, ANOTHER HAPPY DAY and THE OREGONIAN. Industry veteran Thomai Hatsios (THE BANG BANG BROKERS, “Bite Me”) is also on-board producing.
THE SITUATION:
We have financed over half our budget. However, in order to ensure the best possible production value, as well as support the spectacular and ambitious creative vision from the top notch artists invested, we must raise a minimum of $18,000 in additional funds.
Please support the evolution of fine art cinema and the exquisite tenderness of Santa Rosa de Lima.
