BEADY EYE

Posted by Shelbot on November 10, 2010 at 12:37 pm

Beady Eye released their mp3 for the masses yesterday! Who is that you ask? It’s Liam Gallagher’s new band after he got in the fight to end all fights with his brother Noel that ended Oasis. Well inside here at Buddyhead we have had some polarizing discussions thus creating those of us which are TEAM: NOEL and TEAM: LIAM. Surprisingly I (Shelbot) was on TEAM: LIAM though I am not so sure anymore- the bar was set high by Oasis and I dunno if this was the right “big debut track” to get everyone excited. It’s kind of OK 60s-ish Jerry Lee Lewis style rock n’ roll with piano and soulful backup singers. But its just the beginning so maybe there is hope that there will be some epic tunes when they release an album. Only time well tell but for now I can’t say TEAM: LIAM quite scored a goal yet but its pretty alright, so now we anxiously await upon TEAM: NOEL to give us something. Maybe at the end of the next decade we’ll have to have a new obsession and replace the Axl-Rose music reviewing system based on the brother’s Gallagher.

I invite Travis’ play-by-play color-commentary below:

I was really excited when I heard that Beady Eye was releasing their first song this morning for FREE via their website http://www.beadyeyemusic.co.uk/. Then I saw the video clip below on their website and got really excited. Sounds cool, I can’t wait!

Well, I stayed up to hear the new song “Bring The Light” and after listening to it three times I’m bummed I didn’t get some extra sleep. The title of this new song made me think of Richard Ashcroft singing on the first song on that last Verve record (“Oooooohhhhhhhhhh Gimme Some Light! Ooooooohhhhhhh Gimmme The Liiiiiiiiight”), “Forth”, which I like a lot and I’m still pissed I didn’t get to see them on that last tour. I gave my Coachella tickets away cuz someone told me they were playing The Greek in a few months. THAT NEVER HAPPENED!

Anyways, back to “Bring The Light”… You can sample it above via the band’s topspin player and even get an mp3 if you give them your email, you can also stream it below this paragraph with youtube for no particular reason other than I’m so tired I’m bordering on delirious. I sure hope it’s not Beady Eye’s best song. In fact I hope this turd doesn’t make the record, maybe it’s a throw away scrap that didn’t make the record and they’re using reverse psychology. But then again let’s just think “worst-case” scenario here and “Bring The Light” is their best jam…. oh well, Noel record is still gonna SLAY! WOOOOO! NOEL! YEAH!

After listening to that….

For those of you keeping score….

Liam = 0

Noel = 1

(Shelbot Commentary: You can’t give Noel a point, he hasn’t even attempted a goal yet with new solo material. However if you count his solo performances then maybe you can… who is the referee here, Referee McGee?)

In case you have no idea who Beady Eye is and why they have such a terrible band name, lemme fill you in. Liam named em, yes that Liam. Here’s the back story….

So last year Oasis broke up and I’m convinced that what we were shown/ told of what went down is only the tip of an iceberg of a really amazing marketing plan. Tensions were high in Oasis, the last record was hard for them to make according to their Mojo cover story plus it kinda sucked. I mean, I still listen the shit out of it but compared to “Don’t Believe The Truth” (the record before it) it wasn’t shit. Liam left in the middle of recording to get married and didn’t tell anyone (cuz he thought paparazzi would find out and ruin his wedding that nobody cared about – yeah, basically Liam started thinking his name was Brad Pitt and his wife was Angelina), which according to Noel led to some of his best songs being left off the album (and most likely on his solo record) cuz they ended up not having time to finish them. So Oasis was losing steam, no one in America gave a fuck about the band… so here’s what I think was their plan. Break the band up while “still on top” (still playing stadiums) and before things get embarrassing (again – “Be Here Now” – need I say more?) with one last oh-so-familiar (and entertaining) brotherly fight that involves a guitar being smashed to bits (ah rock n’ roll folk-lore). And the party splits in two, so now we have double the radness? Or at least that was the plan… “Bring The Light” is making me think otherwise. More like bring in some guitars dudes.

So back to this plan that I have no proof exists… The Noel-less Oasis will release a couple records under the name Beady Eye which will make those solo records that Noel puts out seem nothing less than God-like. So after Noel basically wins, that power struggle should be over and then it’s reunion time. Who knows, maybe by the time all that goes down not only will America once again give a shit about Oasis but maybe Liam will have figured out how to not sing like shit. Voice lessons you prick, check em out!

And looking back, it was a good time to break up. First off, the last Oasis tour sucked. Both brothers looked like they’d rather be anywhere else and didn’t make eye contact once during the shows I saw. It was almost like they were already in separate bands, especially when Liam left stage for the Noel-part of the set  (“Mucky Fingers”, “Falling Down”, my personal favorite “The Importance Of Being Idle”, “Don’t Look Back In Anger” and “The Masterplan” if your really lucky) which was by far the best part of the set. Sure it was rad to hear “Cigarettes and Alcohol”, “Supersonic”, “Morning Glory”, “Rock N’ Roll Star”, “Lyla”, “Columbia”, “Live Forever”, etc… but Liam’s voice sounded really bad (can you say gravel?) and that’s when he’d actually let you hear him. You see half the show he decided not to sing directly into the microphone and jerk back at the end of every line to produce a sound that gave me a seasick feeling (not sure if that’s what LG was going for or not – dude’s weird).

And secondly seeing Noel play solo (with Gem and a drummer who only had a snare) back on November 9th, 2006 at Wadsworth Theatre (UCLA) play a near flawless show with a b-sides heavy dream-like set-list (the only thing missing for me were songs like Gas Panic, “Sunday Morning Call”, “Where Did It All Go Wrong?”, “Put Yer Money Where Yer Mouth Is” and maybe his Jam cover “To Be Someone”), I realized what I really want is a Noel Gallagher solo album. It has to be done. Back to the show at the Wadsworth Theatre, check out this simply gorgeous 13 song set that I saw.

1. It’s Good To Be Free
2. Talk Tonight
3. Fade Away
4. Cast No Shadow
5. The Importance Of Being Idle
6. Listen Up (Different vocal melody)
7. Half The World Away
8. Wonderwall
9. Whatever (Sped-up version)
10. Slide Away
11. Strawberry Fields Forever (Beatles cover)
12. Don’t Look Back In Anger
13. Married With Children

I gotta confess… I ordered the “limited to 4,000 copies” 7-inch of Beady Eye’s “Bring The Light” B/W “Sons Of The Stage”. In fact, shipping sucked so bad I order two of them. Maybe I’ll give my extra copy to Shelby…. or maybe I’ll sell it on Ebay, depends on what happens this week money-wise.

Shelbot continues:

And an additional note, in the download B.E. give out on their site they include a stencil. Dudes, you gotta draw some lines so the holes in the B and A and D don’t fall out and turn your letters into blobs. Gotta anchor it to the rest of the letter ya know? Now I’m sure TEAM: NOEL is laughing as the letters that get all messy are B A D. That’s not good… gotta score a goal quick lads! I believe in you Andy Bell!

How a functioning stencil should work (note anchor points):

Btw (my shameless plug).
