So I’m not the biggest Black Crowes fan in the world (that title goes to Sam Velde) but it’s safe to say I like em enough to own most of their records and I’ve seen em live a few times as well (the most memorable being when they opened for Tom Petty in Bakersfield – Petty fucked em up!). Hey man, there’s only so many good rock n’ roll bands these days and these cats have made some solid records, do rad covers live and toured with Jimmy Fuckin’ Page playing Led Zeppelin covers… they pass!
And I’m still a fan, even after my run-in with front-man Chris Robinson at a douchey night club (I was forced to attend for a birthday party) where he showed me his “bummer side”. I’d had some alcohol (replace “some” with “a fuck-load” and the truth pops out) and I thought it’d be a great idea to tell him I’d just seen him play up at Big Sur with Entrance. His ego was stoked on that. Then I told him that because he complained through the whole show about how the crowd was talking and wouldn’t focus on him, I figured he either owed me $25 (the high price of the ticket to see that cry baby play) or one of the $25 beers from the bar we were both at. I mean I should be able to do cartwheels around a show if I want to after paying $25! Shut up and play the tunes dudes! To say the least he didn’t laugh. In fact he didn’t show any signs of having much of a sense of humor at all and had his hippy-bros tell me they were gonna “take me outside”. Well nothing happened and like I said before I’m back to being a fan. Although as with any brother band, you gotta pick a side… With Oasis I’m on Team Noel and with The Black Crowes I’m on Team Rich. Anyways, enough about my rambling shit-talkin’ name droppin’ bore of a story (just be happy I didn’t segue into my Oasis/Chris Robinson story)… Let’s get to the new tunes!
So The Black Crowes have a new album coming out called “Before the Frost…Until The Freeze” on August 31, 2009. The fucked up part is if “I Ain’t Hiding” is any indication of the album’s direction, The Black Crowes are going DISCO! At first listen I couldn’t stand this song but after repeated listens I’ve come to really love this Emotional Rescue-ish jam that I can only imagine was birthed from a massive cocaine rodeo. My friend said “It’s so bad it’s good… makes me wanna dance and I don’t dance”. Yep! Chris even sings “coke on the plate” in the first verse so I can’t be too far off. Either way, I’m backing this song, this new disco-cocaine direction The Crowes are headed in and even Mr. Chris Robinson himself. Truce dude, you’re friends with Oasis…. it’s all water under the bridge. How about we seal the deal with one of your Bob Marley joints backstage at the LA show?

Plus Chris just produced my friend’s band Truth And Salvage Co, whom he’s also signed as the first band to his new label and is taking them on the road with The Black Crowes for three months. Talk about a party! If you attend any of the shows, get there early to check em out if you get a chance.
