The Yolks

The other night I went to night one of Pizza Fest, where I got too see The Yolks (with a real sound system!), Coconut Coolouts, Johnny and the Limelight’s, Personal and the Pizzas, and for a brief moment, Tyvek. Anyhow, I was able to snag a copy of the brand spanking new Yolks record, and got the last copy on Blue Vinyl no less! Now i’m here to tell you why you too, should get this record.
So what’s these guys deal you ask? Well, think of the Yolks as Chicago’s version of the Milkshakes. They got a primitive, early 60s garage rock sound, a mix of early Kinks, that Beatles live at the star club LP, mixed up in a blender with Supercharger, the Oblivions, and countless Billy Childish records.
By the way if you don’t know any of those band i just name checked; you better check yourself before you wreck yourself. that’s right i said it.
The record is chocked full of strong that get jammed right up in you head. The record starts off strong, bringing the smash hit, “Long Cold Lonely Night”, which I cant get enough of personally, i mean a song like that I could listen to all day long. That is, if it was’nt for the rest of the record, thankfully the boys tossed in their original #1 hit song from their first 7”, “I Do What I Do” in the mix. If the Yolks could be summed up in one song, it would be “I Do What I Do”, its a brilliant track that more than sums up the bands sound, that and my last break up. I must pause to give props to Swami Alan for turning me on to the yolks visa this song. The tune is a just about perfect, its only flaw is that I cant play it enough times to satisfy my need for the rock’n’roll music. It does help that just about every song is solid, the boys cover their ground well, with the B-side containing the “long lost les sexareenos song” “My Love Is Yours (My Money’s Mine)”, and a fairly nice folky type number “Wandering Rambling”. Also if you think this band sounds like No Bunny, its cuz they have been known to back up the perverted genius. For some reason, this seems to be the summer of really solid garage rock, and if you gotta pick and choose what records to get, i’d put this at the top of your list.
