Black Mountain on Conan
Update: I originally didn’t have time to write anything for this post because I threw this video up as I was running out the door to do way-more-important shit.
But now that I’ve got some FREE time, here comes some babble…
Some of our favorite Canadians are the dudes (and dudette) in Black Mountain. They’re right up there with Neil Young, Rick James, The Band & Nardwuar. Ok, they’re not quite as cool as Neil, Rick or those badasses in The Band yet… they’re somewhere between those dudes and Nardwuar. Either way, Black Mountain rips and Canadians are great. They’ve legalized weed, they’ve all got health insurance, they barely ever shoot each other (no guns!) and (at least in Vancouver) they’ve got some really hot chicks.
And now Canada has got Black Mountain to be proud of too! Who were on international television the other night! Yep on Februrary 21st, 2008 Black Mountain were on NBC’s Conan O’Brien show along with the well spoken Barbara Walters and the heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko! That’s a big deal man! Let’s give them a round of applause for bringing rock n’ roll into the homes of millions of people. And now… they’re still on tour… so go see em.
Hey Black Mountain, if you’re reading this… you should put Matt (your bass player) in the front cuz he head bangs and goes off. People wanna be able to see that shit… it’s killer, trust me.

I would have never checked out this band until you posted this video.
Maybe this one will help me get my girlfriend into stoner metal and then she can stop listening to CSS.
February 22nd, 2008 at 10:18 pm
HAHA stoner metal I like that!
Cool video Travis, when was this Tapped? “In the future” album is why I ask, being a new album that just came out in the January time frame….I think they are playing tonight at Bowery Ballroom in the city and Brooklyn tomorrow. I may go see them tomorrow, if weather is better.
February 22nd, 2008 at 11:11 pm
I missed them when they came to town. I fail at life.
February 23rd, 2008 at 12:24 am
BM has alway done it for me. They’ve got that Black Sabbath-Grace Slick-transcendent quality. Iron Man feeds your head.
February 23rd, 2008 at 4:18 am
ugh, i was going to go see them in bklyn, can’t remember if it’s at glasslands or asterisk…
but i have absolutely no money, so i’m shit out of luck.
the weather has been shit, too. good point.
February 23rd, 2008 at 12:20 pm
I’m seeing them next month. Nice to see how Travis doesn’t include the Texas dates. Prolly cos if he came over here, he would be have his ass kicked.
February 23rd, 2008 at 12:30 pm
Deerhoof is playing the same night in Toronto and I can’t figure out which band I prefer to see…
February 23rd, 2008 at 12:38 pm
Hey, B.
Deerhoof? Go see Black Mountain, they play real rock n roll! Deerhoof is lame.
February 23rd, 2008 at 12:54 pm
I kinda like Deerhoof… Well I was ready to listen to you Liz but apparently Black Mountain’s show is sold out so fate has decided for me!
February 23rd, 2008 at 1:47 pm
shut that bitch up
February 23rd, 2008 at 2:00 pm
Black Mountain are a bunch of scabby scabs. By appearing on Conan they are sending the message that they hate writers.
February 23rd, 2008 at 2:19 pm
didn’t the writer’s strike end on february 12th? if this show was taped february 21st, how are they scabs? DEP, on the other hand…
February 23rd, 2008 at 4:33 pm
hahahah- Mr. Jones…do you live in Alaska in an igloo…Writer’s strike officially ended two Wednesdays ago. Nice try at sounding in-the-know. Maybe next time.
If I had a dollar for everytime I got laid to “Druganaut” id be richer than Conan.
Conan and BM…the shit
February 23rd, 2008 at 5:02 pm
Thanks for reminding me I need to get tickets to their show. Seeing Black Mountain in a hometown gig at the best venue in the city? I can’t wait for that shit.
February 23rd, 2008 at 7:45 pm
Fuck you, I am your favourite Canadian.
February 23rd, 2008 at 7:46 pm
YES! it’s true canadians do rule. we keep violence to a min and we’ve got hot chicks all over the country. travis, where the hell have you been?!?!? check out the t dot and montreal[hot french girls who shower, shave and can speak anglais too! what’s not to like!??]
as for bm, is it the 60s again? i fucken hope so!
February 23rd, 2008 at 8:11 pm
Now that’s some effin rock. Reindeer sweaters are the sartorial equivalent of doing blow off chicks’ asses.
February 24th, 2008 at 3:04 am
saw them at rock n roll hotel in DC on 2-19. long time fan. check out jerk with a bomb, pink mountaintops, lightning dust, blood meridian. you hosers.
February 24th, 2008 at 3:09 pm
Blood Meridian is weak. Fag
February 24th, 2008 at 3:47 pm
These guys do not dissapoint live. They Slay. Last time I saw them my face melted off.
February 24th, 2008 at 7:35 pm
Does anyone know what kind of keyboard this scab is using to get that Mellotron string sound?
February 24th, 2008 at 9:52 pm
Black Mountain are SO fuckin overrated, it’s ridiculous
February 25th, 2008 at 12:34 am
These guys are alright and everything, but if ya like the slow stoner rock why not go to the source? Ever heard of the band “Sleep?” YouTube it.
February 25th, 2008 at 3:23 am
they kicked ass in austin. played with dead meadow and blood on the wall. great show.
February 25th, 2008 at 4:49 am
Wasn’t Sleep mostly instrumental? Didn’t they have 20 minute songs that dragged and were only tolerable if you were high? Didn’t they break up and go on to form High on Fire.. BM is current, evolved, accessible with great choruses. Support touring bands is what I say and lets stop living in the past.
February 25th, 2008 at 5:01 am
I seriously think that conan has more than 2 dollars to his name
February 25th, 2008 at 5:03 am
lol! True sly!
February 25th, 2008 at 11:37 am

February 25th, 2008 at 2:17 pm
Jeff, buddyhead format is fine. maybe it’s your browser that hates your life and that’s why it isn’t working for you. try mozilla firefox bitch, explorer sucks big black cock. [ha, not a bad thing but ‘tev]
February 25th, 2008 at 2:47 pm
“So dude, have you heard my band? It’s so crucial, bro. It’s like Jack Black meets Big Black.”
First, let me say that Black Mountain rules. Second, let me say that this “black” band name trend has to stop. I wrote up some band names for everyone else to cash in on so we can finally get over it and move on to the next trend. Here ya go:
The Blackness
The Black Madonnas
Blacker than Blackness
Black, Black, No Take-backs
Illegitimate Black Daughter
Black Wang
Black and Sticky
Baa, Baa, Black Porn Star
Why It Gotta Be Black?
It’s a Black Thing
Cosby, Bills, and Steve Nash
Taye Diggs? He So Fine.
You Gots Fifty Cents?
Blackface Cabbage Patch Kids
Blackity Black, Don’t Talk Back
Black Sabbath-Episode II-The Case of the Mondays
A Cannon (it’s a punchline to the joke, what’s long, black and shoots lots of “seamen”)
Once, Twice, Three Times a Rapist (unrelated, but has a nice ring to it)
My Black Dad
Blac Party
The Black Cat Ate my Gay Baby
The Long Black Male
Flop Your Boner, Say Black!
Pure Mississippi Black Snake
Blaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaack…
(((Black)))
February 25th, 2008 at 3:23 pm

February 25th, 2008 at 6:41 pm
these cats are playing a bunch of SXSW dates… check it.
February 25th, 2008 at 11:28 pm
E-brah, that shit is priceless. You should take that show on the road. A loooooooong road. Like, away from here, where there is no internet access, nor potable drinking water.
February 25th, 2008 at 11:50 pm
potable water is weak. Fag.
February 26th, 2008 at 12:07 am
Hold on, E-brah’s got both neurons processing that last one.
February 26th, 2008 at 1:28 am
besides firefox, buddyhead also looks good with flock
February 28th, 2008 at 5:31 am
Black Mountain is about as interesting as dudes in shitty sweaters with beards.
February 28th, 2008 at 12:19 pm
How about I keep my guns and Canada can keep their nerds with beards and sweaters?
February 28th, 2008 at 12:22 pm
Hey BVA -trying to start a war? Figures….
February 28th, 2008 at 2:01 pm
Black Mountain kills it. If you don’t like this stuff then I don’t think we’ll agree on anything.
This is balls out psychedelic rock, solid songwriting and the entire band can play well. This video really doesn’t do them justice. See them live.
Smoke a big one and listen.
If these cats are overrated, please, please post someone who plays this kind of shit better. I’d love to check it out.
February 28th, 2008 at 3:03 pm
I missed the Black Mountain show at Neumo’s recently, and had still never seen them live, until a few days after the show I missed, I was lucky enough to see them at a killer house party! To see a band that just sold out a huge rock club in a basement! YOWZA!
April 3rd, 2008 at 9:11 am
Their first album was really good, but In The Future is some seriously next level shit.
Just caught them again the other night and all I can say is do not miss them if they come to your town. Wow.
