New live Clash movie from Don Letts

February 27th, 2008 by Travis Keller

The dude who made that killer Clash movie “Westway To The World”, Don Letts, has a new documentary called “The Clash Live: Revolution Rock” airing on PBS in March (check www.theclashonline.com for PBS air times in your market) and hitting stores as a DVD on April 15th. I haven’t seen it yet so I dunno if it’s good or not, but I’ll let you know how it is once Uncle Scott drags me to see it. Dig on what the press releases said….

“The film follows the live transformation of the band, incorporating footage from all phases of the Clash’s meteoric career, beginning with live-in-the-studio clips and climaxing with a blow-out performance at New York’s Shea Stadium in 1982. With rare and previously unreleased footage from all over the world, this film documents the history of the band by showcasing their incredible live performances, and will be a draw for both the new fan and their established passionate followers.”

Sounds killer to me. Here’s the trailer:

It rules being me today

February 26th, 2008 by Troy Boy

052207coleuvs.jpgAs I’m sure most of you know, Travis is homeless (living at “Shabbey Road”) and jobless. Because of both he figured it was time for some major purging of his belongings… He told me that he was going to be selling alot of his cds/records and if I wanted to, I could have first dibs on whatever before he heads off to Ameoba to make some quick cash.

So after I got off work today, I jumped on the freeway and headed up to West Hollywood where I met up with him at Aaron’s place. Then I raped his cd collection, smoked what pot he had, drank three of Aaron’s Mountain Dew “Amps” and listened to Travis’s favorite punk 7″ from when he was 16 by a band called “Life After Johnny”, which suprisingly slays if you happend to be into whole Idaho punk scene. If anyone’s got “Life After Johnny” mp3s, email em to me.

Anyways, I left there with about a 100 cds (one being the Ultra Vivid Scene pictured above), high as balls like a kid at christmas minus the red rider bb gun. Thanks dude… it rules to be me today.

Also, Travis and I will be djing a bunch of shows at the El Rey and Henry Fonda this month. If you happened to be attending one of those shows look for us, say hi and buy us some beers (if you’ve got that kind of extra coin) cuz for some reason we only get four drink tickets for the both of us. And everyone knows four drinks ain’t getting either one of us even buzzed, we’re professionals.

Oh, and here are some tracks I really dig from this band called “Ride the Blinds”.

Silver Lions 20/20

February 26th, 2008 by Travis Keller

silver.jpg

So I know this grumpy old British dude named Simon (yeah I know that they’re all named Simon ang grumpy) who knows a shit-ton about rock n’ roll and also happens to distribute some of our records on his small ice-island known as the UK (through his company Forte) so I talk to him often. As soon as my previous post about The Black Keys went live, Simon was sure to let me know that I was in fact a “poser” and that I should check out a band called “Silver Lions 20/20″. Well like I said, I’m not a huge fan of The Black Keys and Simon is fucking right… I’m a poser and Silver Lions 20/20 fuckin’ rip.

Look like a pretty rad Dylan poster where ever they are playing in that photo above (which has nothing to do with anything other than that’s fuckin’ cool) and I think they need to come play LA.

Hey, do it.

I don’t have an mp3 of the yet to share with you but when I get one I’ll post it RIGHT HERE. For now, take your drunk ass over to their myspace page and stream three songs.

The Black Keys… and Dangermouse?

February 26th, 2008 by Travis Keller

blackkeys.jpg

I’m not the biggest fan of The Black Keys, but I think they’re better than most current bands out there today. That “10 AM Automatic” song they put out a few years ago is rad and I dug that free live EP they gave away last year. I’ll take these dudes over those last two White Stripes records anyday…

Whelp, according to the email their publicist just sent me, the good news is that they’ve got a new record coming out sometime soon. The bad news is that on their new single “Strange Times”, they worked with some hip hopper named Dangermouse. If you don’t know how I feel about rock and hip hop coming together click here. Dangermous is the guy that raped all those Beatles records by cutting them up and mashing them up with some Jay-Z record (totally unnecessary) and he’s also the dude responsible for that “Crazy” song every dipshit in the world loved last year (thanks bro).

icon for podpress  The Black Keys - Strange Times [3:17m]Play Now

“Strange Times” actually doesn’t really sound as bad as I imagined it would, but I could do without the wack Gorillaz sounding keyboard line, the oohs/ahhs and the safe production. If a member of The Black Keys, their management or label want a long list of future producers they should work with that will run circles around Mr. Dangerdork all they gotta do is drop me an email. And for the record, The Gorillaz really bum me out.

What do you guys (the readers of this sad site) think of this new single “Strange Times? Let’s hear some opinions cuz I know you’ve all got em… let em rip!

I’ve never seen these dudes live, but they are on tour now. Tour dates here. If you happen to see em, let us know below how the show is…

Also, we just started using the Yahoo player (cause Ian Rogers told me to) for the mp3s on this site now… anyone dig that or care?

Black Mountain on Conan

February 22nd, 2008 by Travis Keller

Update: I originally didn’t have time to write anything for this post because I threw this video up as I was running out the door to do way-more-important shit.

But now that I’ve got some FREE time, here comes some babble…

Some of our favorite Canadians are the dudes (and dudette) in Black Mountain. They’re right up there with Neil Young, Rick James, The Band & Nardwuar. Ok, they’re not quite as cool as Neil, Rick or those badasses in The Band yet… they’re somewhere between those dudes and Nardwuar. Either way, Black Mountain rips and Canadians are great. They’ve legalized weed, they’ve all got health insurance, they barely ever shoot each other (no guns!) and (at least in Vancouver) they’ve got some really hot chicks.

And now Canada has got Black Mountain to be proud of too! Who were on international television the other night! Yep on Februrary 21st, 2008 Black Mountain were on NBC’s Conan O’Brien show along with the well spoken Barbara Walters and the heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko! That’s a big deal man! Let’s give them a round of applause for bringing rock n’ roll into the homes of millions of people. And now… they’re still on tour… so go see em.

Hey Black Mountain, if you’re reading this… you should put Matt (your bass player) in the front cuz he head bangs and goes off. People wanna be able to see that shit… it’s killer, trust me.

This was just brought to our attention…

February 21st, 2008 by Travis Keller

evan_brian.jpg

After looking over the photos from Monday night’s Buddyhead X-Mas party, we think we might have some Back To The Future type shit on our hands here. Whatever you do, don’t allow Evan Weiss and Brian Bell anywhere near each other, cuz if these two make eye contact, the world just might fuckin’ end in the blink of an eye.

Buddyhead goes Japanese anime

February 18th, 2008 by Travis Keller

buddyhead_by_ryu_no_joou.jpg

Someone just emailed me this link where someone has drawn a Japanese anime cartoon of Aaron (left) and myself (right) with the tag-line “When Shit Goes Fully Off, We’re There!”. I know it’s kind of lame to post shit about yourself… but fuck man, this is pretty fuckin’ funny and accurate (Aaron looks like a chick just like in real life). Below are the artist’s Comments

“:D I had to do this….

Aaron North and Travis Keller, the two “scruffy dudes” (their words) who are the record label Buddyhead. I had to draw them, they’re just so cute….

Hand-drawn and coloured. Text and the stolen Buddyhead logo were added in Gimpshop. *_* And I don’t care what DA says, my anime drawings do NOT need to be in “Portraits”. To me, portraits are realistic, not cartoony. What DA needs to do, seriously, is add a “celebrities” category to “Fan Art”. Problem solved. If this gets taken down, I’ll be mega-pissed.”

Troy Boy does The Duke Spirit

February 16th, 2008 by Troy Boy

duke.jpg

(Photo: Emilie Elizabeth)

So the other day I was out doing my usual shit and somebody asked me why I haven’t reviewed the new Duke Spirit album on that Buddyhead site. Fuck man, I forgot! I know, I’m such a POSER! So, Without further ado..

This New Duke Spirit Record, “Neptune” isn’t much of a surprise, it’s totally fucking rad. Just as I expected. These boys and girl can do no wrong in my book and I think it’s safe to say, I am totally in love with this band of sweet hearts. The world needs more bands like this, seriously…

This long overdue second full length was recorded out at the Rancho de Luna studio in Joshua Tree with help from Chris Goss (Musician/producer/engineer/magician) who has produce records by bands like Kyuss, Nebula, Queens of the Stone Age, Mark Lanegan, The Eighties Matchbox B-Line Disaster, Lupe Fiasco, UNKLE (one of my top 5 records of 2007) and (now) The Duke Spirit. Chris has also played in the bands Goon Moon and Masters of Reality (among a ton of others). In short, the dude rips.

Anyhoo, “Neptune” has songs to dance to, air drum to, to take drugs to, drive to, head-bang to and well most importanly… fuck to! This record immediately hit my g-spot like any well trained professional would. No time is wasted fumbling with my belt, this record gets straight to the action. Their looming fuzzy bass lines and Stooges-like progression takes the the cake and eats it too. Pardon my French but, Liela Moss’s voice is kind of like getting blown by angel.

My two favorite tracks are “This Ship Was Built to Last” And “Wooden Heart”. Listening to these two little ditties back to back just gives me that chill up and down my spine like when I first fell in love with music back when I was a wee-lad. It also reminds me of when I was 10 years old and had just fallen in love as well as had my heart broken for the first time by girl twice my age. Not only do you now know I got started at a young age but I think you get what I’m saying about this band musically.

The Duke Spirit’s new record rips like my friend Eddie’s farts. If you don’t own their first record “Cuts Across The Land” and first EP “Roll, Spirit, Roll” then consider your self to be blowing it. They also have like 25 Singles you need to hear as well… dig around for them. Go spend some hard earned money on a band that actually deserves it.

Darker My Love and Movin’ On Up

February 14th, 2008 by Kathleen

darkermylove.jpg

This weekend I will be moving back to my old neighborhood in the valley. While I am looking forward to the change, I am sad because for the past four months I have enjoyed sharing a house with and observing the intricacies of Jared Everett, guitar player in a little band called Darker My Love.

“Summer Is Here” music video

Jared is a very interesting young man. This morning my car was blocked in the driveway, so I groggily called him at 8:45 a.m. and asked him to move his car so that I could go on my way to work. After about 10 minutes, he appeared out of nowhere (from outside), climbed into his car and proceeded to back out of the driveway. The amazing thing is, the back right tire was flat, so it was rather endearing to watch his car sputter backwards while the defunct tire flapped and made loud noises. “My life sucks”, he said as he rolled down the window.

I recall this one moment when I walked into the bathroom, and came across the bathtub filled with dark blue water. I then walked into the living room and saw Jared standing on a chair, directly in front of the heater, wearing nothing but a pair of stiff blue jeans. “Um, what are you doing?” I asked. “Drying my jeans”, he replied in a tone colored with “Duh”. Two days ago he was mentioning that his friend knows someone that makes shoes out of human skin. Jared then decided that he must write out his will and make sure that all of his friends will receive a bone from his body should he pass away. After some thought he said that when he dies he wants there to be a “Jared Suit”, made from his skin that his friends could wear. But he insisted that it be made with a vintage zipper, and not a “shitty YKK one”. Yesterday he informed me he would “actually rather be a pair of boots than a suit”. Mmk. He has all sorts of interesting artifacts, such as an anatomy pop-up book from 1891, or his red 1968 Honda 90 motorcycle that he rolls on in his leather jacket, which couldn’t have possibly been made past 1969. He has a good eye with the camera and of course 8mm is the standard. Look out for music videos for Tweak Bird and Tsk Tsk directed by him in the near future, as well as others. It is a shame I will not be sharing a living space with this fascinating creature anymore. I will no longer be able to bogart his sweet 60s amps or watch “Dirty Jobs” (on the Discovery Channel) with him, which he has noted is his “favorite show ever”. I will no longer have access to his rad and hilarious tour footage that I bugged him to send to me so I could put it up here, but he has been both too busy and lazy to sift through them all and oblige.

jaredjeans.jpgjaredclown.jpg

This also means I will no longer have the pleasure of having the first listen to the latest mixes off of Darker My Love’s highly anticipated release, due out on Dangerbird Records in the Spring, or most likely Summer. They have been working on this since last June. It was recorded in several studios in Los Angeles, such as Sunset Sound, and was mixed by Tony Hoffer (Beck, Air). I would come home and hear the sounds blasting from his room, and it was as if I was hit with a wave of electricity. It is simply amazing… y’know, mindblowing. It is also a bit unexpected, as the songs venture in different directions and the tones are smooth as glass. You can actually hear Tim’s vocals and they are lovely. Oasis, Jesus and Mary Chain and Supergrass all came to mind when listening to the tracks. It is quite a metamorphosis, but they still have the same far-out psychedelic grit. There were also some sweet funky grooves as well as rippers that moved me to dance right then and there, before or after I was impelled to smoke a bowl. This is some great stuff that folks are gonna trip out over. Come get a sneak preview of these tunes when they play at smokey 6th Street Warehouse this Saturday. Hopefully they will cover Can again.

Tonight, The Night Marchers!

February 11th, 2008 by Travis Keller

Photobucket

The Night Marchers are playing tonight (February, 11 2008) at All Star Lanes in Eagle Rock, California with 400 Blows, Crystal Antlers and Fast Dragon. Now, normally I don’t make field trips to Eagle Rock, but when John Reis (Hot Snakes/Rocket From The Crypt/Drive Like Jehu), Gar (Hot Snakes/Beehive and the Barracudas), Jason (Hot Snakes) and some other dude on bass start a new band… I’m there bitch! Who’s buying me drinks? I’m couch-surfing but let’s get this party started!

This will be their first LA show and if the record I got in the mail is any indication, they’re gonna rip the roof off this joint tonight! Think Hot Snakes meets The Cramps. I’d post a couple mp3s here but the cd Vagrant sent me is one of those wack copy protected ones that computers can’t read. Great idea… that’ll stop file sharing… NOT! Only thing that does is now I can’t promote your band… IDIOTS! If anyone’s cracked that bullshit yet and has actual mp3s, email me @ traviskeller@gmail.com so I can post em here for people to check out the radness.

By the way… on a totally unrelated note… Oasis is in LA doing guitars and vocals, finishing up their new record with Dave Sardy! I know cuz we ran into them at the Black Mountain show the other night (which was at The Troubadour), traded nukes and ended up drinking with them until 6am! Noel told me that the new record “is psychedelic, will prolly only sell five copies but it’s gonna be fuckin’ tits”! That my friends is why Los Angeles rules.

And… Keith Richards has some advice for Amy Winehouse, “She should get her act together. Apart from that, I have got nothing to say to the bitch.” Keith wins again!

Oh and what the fuck is this? I’m calling our lawyer!

Listen to Bring Back the Guns now that Dry Futures is out, finally

February 11th, 2008 by Graham Isaac

bbtg.jpg There’s gotta be something about the water in Texas that produces good bands. I mean there’s, um, well, okay, so right now I’m blanking on newer bands, mainly thinking back to Austin a little while ago. And Fatal Flying Guillotines. They’re good. But right now I’m thinking of Houston’s Bring Back the Guns, who I stumbled across during a time in my life when I thought it was a really smart idea to let a whole bunch of drunk kids into my basement every weekend to watch bands play. I was living in Bellingham, Washington at the time (it’s about two hours north of Seattle and everyone’s stoned and has beards or complains about how everyone’s stoned and has beards.) Every time this happened our pilot light went out and we were without heat until someone figured out how to fix it. Most of the bands that played were local and have since broken up but we got some starving punks on tour, and one night in December ’05 (yeah, dude, gettin’ old) Bring Back the Guns.

The band from Seattle dropped out and we didn’t want to make BBTG go last, so the show got started pretty late but it was a good one. BBTG rocked the fine line between jumpy, self-aware indie rock (think Dismemberment Plan, early Pavement, etc) and heavier, more fractured grooves (think, I don’t know, Drive Like Jehu, Fugazi, etc.) They kicked ass, basically.

The band crashed in the living room, told tour stories and gave me a copy of their then-un mastered album “Dry Futures,” saying it’d be out officially “sometime next year.” Now, two years and some change later, it’s actually out and available for listening to, purchasing and getting your nervous, staticky groove on to. The pleasant irony of the long wait is that the record comes out when this sort of stuff seems to be undergoing a bit of a resurgence, probably thanks to Les Savy Fav’s recent comeback in spades and people getting increasingly tired of “dance punk” and indie rock that sounds like a dentist’s office soundtrack. This probably wasn’t planned, but we’ll just pretend it was all part of BBTG’s brilliant marketing scheme.

Check out the tracks below and see if you agree.

Jubilee Digital Music Store

February 9th, 2008 by Aaron North

l_2519786d73be46bdb61bccfa0adee2ac.jpg

Attention Friends:

So… We realize it’s taken us some time to get a digital version of our music widely available, but we promise that once it is, the wait will have been well worth it. Soon, not only will you be able to buy our debut single “Rebel Hiss” as MP3’s, but with your purchase, you’ll also receive exclusive photos, lyrics, liner notes, etc. that will not be available on any other online music stores (such as I-Tunes, etc.). In our store, you can also buy each song individually, or the entire 4 song single for just $3.00. WAV and FLAC formats will also be available soon as well.

As of now, the only way you can get started with this whole thing, is by signing up here. Within a couple weeks, this step of the process will be abandoned, but for now it’s the only way in… Almost. Besides that route, you can also have a friend who has already signed up, “share” the music with you. This works with them pushing the “share” button on their player, and then them submitting your email address, at which time you’ll receive an email inviting you to also purchase the music.

Now, here’s where the exciting part kicks in… If instead of just buying the single, you choose to pay $19.95 for a “subscription”, this will entitle you to an UNLIMITED source of Jubilee’s entire output for the year 2008. This includes the “Rebel Hiss” single, at least 2 more upcoming album singles also containing exclusive non-album tracks, the full-length debut album, exclusive live tracks, music videos, live videos, photos, lyrics, artwork, etc. Your “subscription” is also the only way you’ll get a shot at obtaining super limited pressings of Jubilee vinyl (including rare first pressings and even test presses), and even allows you first access to owning every release before anybody else will… Not to mention a slew of even more interesting aspects that will all be revealed in due time.

Ok, THE MOST EXCITING PART… If you pay the $19.95 for “subscribing” to the “2008 Jubilee Digital Music Service” (Sorry, we’ll come up with a cooler name later), at the end of the year, you’ll also receive an exclusive 7-inch single ONLY available to subscribers forking over the $19.95. YES, this vinyl record will also include even more exclusive tracks not available ANYWHERE ELSE. Not in stores, not even digitally… And YES, we’ll even mail the lil sucker straight into your palms at our expense. This is something we will be continuing annually hereafter for all those signing up for the “full package deal”.

Sound cool? Just please keep in mind that we are still in the early test stages of this whole thing. Also keep in mind that liner notes, more photos, and other extras that come with your purchases will be more extensive in detail soon. Try to be patient as we work out all the kinks, and realize that this approach to purchasing music digitally, and being involved in a more direct way with it, has never been attempted in this manner before. With all that in mind, again, like we said, just stick with us while we work the bugs out. We PROMISE ya won’t get screwed.

Thanks,
- Jubilee

Get yr Skull Music: Clockcleaner

February 8th, 2008 by Graham Isaac

clock.jpgI hope that, if I’m ever committed for psychiatric examination, the folks in charge don’t dig through my record collection looking for clues. Because while there’s probably a good section of it that would register relatively sane, there’s also some selections that would raise eyebrows. You know, your collections of murder ballads, sarcastic bastard rock and so on. The good shit.

And then there’s Clockcleaner.

Lately I’ve been listening to this Philadelphia band whenever I feel like Future of the Left or Big Black are too, you know, wholesome. They’re loud and slimy, with washes of noise and delayed vocals, sounding like a more technically accomplished Flipper, or a less goofy version of older Butthole Surfers records. A few songs cop a psychobilly vibe, giving singer John Sharkey the 3rd’s tales of sex and dysfunction a backwoods edge. On “New in Town,” the opening track to Babylon Rules, Sharkey tells us a tale of urban paranoia, climaxing with the line “she said don’t come inside me/I’m new in town.” “Daddy Issues” explores similar topics with a touch as gentle as a sledgehammer.

Thing is, it wouldn’t all work if the band didn’t have the smarts and chops to pull it off. Anyone can come up with something fucked up to say, not everyone has the riffs to back it up. Sharkey’s howls are angry and abusive but also throw out a real sense of fear and conscience-wrestling.

And not everyone balances the noise and menace with enough ugly hooks to get the songs burrowing into your head. “Vomiting Mirrors” is downright catchy in spite of itself, with Stooges piano clanging over a barrelling guitar riff. With “Babylon Rules” Clockcleaner have created an album as dark and abrasive as punk used to be and as tough as nails.

Now excuse me, I have to take some meds.

SHAT is on tour. Lock up your women!

February 8th, 2008 by Travis Keller

studio6.jpg

It’s the simple things in life that really matter and get me out of bed in the morning (or in today’s case the late afternoon)… like the look on a person’s face when they ask what records my label puts out and I get to respond with “Oh… and we also put out this band called SHAT… Uh-huh yeah, like the past tense of shit.” Much like Shat… that joke never gets old for me.

If you’ve never had the privilege of witnessing the shear madness and genius that is a live Shat show… you really don’t know what you’re missing, it’s truly a night you’ll never forget. You’ll either leave a fan (not to mention some sore sides from laughing so much) or you’ll leave totally horrified, bummed out and a large stick still rammed firmly up your ass. There’s really no middle ground with Shat, you’re either in or out with this band. They force you to have an opinion, which is somewhat rare today and exactly why I’m glad they’re out there being Shat… stirring it up.

If you don’t chuckle just reading songs like “If She Has A Kid, You Know She Fucks”, “Tit Fuck”, “B.V.A. (Bloated Vagina Area)”, R”ob From The Rich And Give To The Whores”, “I Fucked Your Wife”, “You’ve Got No Ass”, “Vagetarian”, “Thank God For Pussy” and “Born To Be A Lesbian” then you’re probably reading the wrong website. A sense of humor is needed, but this isn’t a joke band at all. Songwriter and front-man Jeff Wood is the real deal and he’s got a bullet in his head to prove it. For more on that click on that newspaper article below and read his bio here. It’s a pretty crazy story, the dude is lucky to even be walking and talking let alone singing songs about how much he loves the fairer sex.

For those who haven’t seen this underground legend… you are in luck! Shat is on tour right now in the United States of America, make sure you don’t miss them when they come through your town. Make sure to bring your wallet cuz you really need to own the Shat shirt that simply says “Food Sex Metal” on the back. It’s a bit of a commitment but you’re definitely saying something with that on.

If you are lucky enough to live in LA (or surrounding areas) mark down February 18th on your calendar cuz Shat is headlining Buddyhead’s Belated X-mas Party @ La Cita (336 South Hill Street LA, CA 90013) in downtown. We were gonna have it actually during the holidays but we were too hungover and had way too much shit going on to properly execute it. Sorry, we go off. And as if Shat wasn’t enough to make you get down there, also on the bill are three of the world’s best party bands: Sid Brown, (who has hot female dancers that hand out shots of Whiskey and morraccas to members of the crowd, a rippin’ lesbian on guitar, video screen and a shirtless Sid Brown on vocals) DTFM (Ex drummer from Wires On Fire fronting the valley’s best party band) and Shit Yeah (Hell Yeah’s rival)!

And just like last year’s Buddyhead X-mas party (that was actually held in December), you’ll be able to sit on Santa Casper’s lap, tell him everything you wanted for Christmas last year (or get a head start on the shit you want for this year) and get your photo taken with his drunk ass. Up in the Dj booth you’ll find Aaron, Troy Boy, myself and some other surprise guests (not all at once) will be playing killer rock records in between the bands. And last but not least… the drink specials are killer… $2 Tecate! $3 Domestic beer! $4 Import Beer! Cheap Jager shots!

buddyhead-sm.jpg

It’s a win-win situation for everyone… spread the word.

1558376078_l.jpg

By the way, I’d like to point out and welcome our new writers to Buddyhead. Make sure to say hi to the new guys/girls and jump em in if you have to.

I just got back from a short UK tour with Aaron’s band, Jubilee, only to find that I’m unemployed and homeless. Dramatic huh? It’s not that bad actually cuz I’m currently living on Aaron’s couch. It’s a pretty sweet couch, then again I helped him pick it out I think. Ok, maybe I was just there and Uncle Scott helped him pick it out. Either way, I need to get off this thing soon and get a room somewhere… So, if anyone in the LA area is renting a room for a reasonable price, is clean, isn’t a knife wielding psycho, doesn’t have weird pets like ferrets, rats or snakes that’ll bite me and wouldn’t mind me renting from them for cheap… shoot me an email dude. And Another One..

February 7th, 2008 by Zach Stephenson

the_wild_bunch.jpg

The Giants took one home! How many little bros do you know that have made history? Like Eric Roberts said in The Pope of Greenwich Village, “it’s all in the genes.”

The Pats were a dynasty, eh? Honestly, I feel a little sorry for Seau. I guess it’s back to surfing if he’s still trying to catch the big one! Speaking of one last shot, 2008 looks like it’s continuing the trend of aging dudes trying to cash in. One thing’s for sure, if you thought the influx of “reunited” bands like Dinosaur Jr. and The Stooges were the reckoning, then, you’re in luck today!

On the other side of the pond - Billy Bragg is dropping a new album in April. It features The Faces’ Ian McLagan on the piano/organ and is being produced by Limey shogun, Grant Showbiz - otherwise known as the mysterious producer whose resume includes The Fall, Alternative TV, The Smiths and Gong. Robert Wyatt also contributes vocals on the opening track, so there aren’t any semi-redundant observations on this one. Consider me siked!

After failing to get anyone to care the first time around, the drummer and bassist from The Jam have stopped sacrificing classics on stage and decided to record some new material! Last year, they made an even better decision and scrapped their band name, ‘The Gift’ (named after the final Jam album.) Their new name? From The Jam! I’m not sure who the creative force behind The Jam was [uhhh, Paul Weller], but I’ve got $500 bucks from a Super Bowl pool to ride the sneaking suspicion that it was neither of these two.

Going off the response of The Gift, the Gang of Four have decided to record some new material, too.

“When we first got back together a couple years ago, doing the ‘reunion’ part of touring and all that, we resisted making new material. We had the fear that we weren’t ready, that it had been too long a time for people to care.”

As expected, the gang is making sure that people don’t get it twisted. ‘The cowboy is still befriending the Indian.’

“Rock music has lost its way,” he continues. “People used to be speaking out in the arts in other place [sic], but in the last 15 years, all the artists have become pro-everything. Rock ceded our voice to underground hip-hop, speaking out about social issues and American hegemony, but now even that’s gone.”

I’m guessing these blokes aren’t paying attention to the indie news circuit! Haven’t they heard Bright Eyes, Arcade Fire and everyone else that thrives on the jugular of the music/blog atmosphere is backing Obama? Even Pete Wentz is down! Gang of Four – get your game on track. Indie rockers are out to change the world!

While I’m on the internets, here’s a quote I came across while drunkenly reminiscing teenage fanzines…

From Mike Ness [of Social Distortion] back in Feb ‘97:

“I personally don’t know how to work a computer yet, but I’ve seen results from the Internet from us. It’s been very cool. People can find out about us at any given moment by pushing a few buttons…”

Eleven years later, that still stands true. But, besides the free and easy download factor, has the Internet really leveled the playing field? Sure a lot of old bands are now getting recognition b/c of that previous fact. And a couple new ones, too. Shit, I just cracked a PBR as I got a couple new LPs.

The real question is if the businessmen and music hobbyists are now in sync. Looking at the scope of things, they are! Have you seen one band hit the web without instant gratification from at least ten bloggers?

So, you’re asking, what’s the point? Mike Ness’s vision, as was the vision of many others, unfortunately dropped the ball. DIY has died. The initial fan sites have molded into hype machines that are faster respondents than Rolling Stone and Spin. It’s not a horrible thing, just a sign that technology doesn’t change everything.

Before I get too preachy, that issue of Juice also covered Jon Spencer Blues Explosion and the Descendents, so maybe ‘97 was just a good year, you think?

On the stateside path, Bonnaroo has confirmed Pearl Jam and Metallica on their bill. Hmm, Lollapalooza ‘95 sounds sweet, Perry! Rilo Kiley is also on the showcase, which isn’t a surprise, but for some reason I suddenly care! Get ready to put on your semi-boner shorts, ’cause I just found out that the chick in the band is none than the ’80s smart-ass snatch from…

Too bad Fred Savage had dibbs! Speaking of snatch, Benicio Del Toro and William Reid’s side project has officially declared a date for her Tom Waits tribute. Anywhere I Lay My Head features Nick Zinner on guitar and is being produced by that dude from TV on the Radio. It comes out on sometime in April, so mark your whatever calendars.

Billboard has stated Slash is ‘itching’ to start the new Velvet Revolver album. Sweet! I think Bill Hicks had it right when he said musicians were better when they were on drugs. The ’sober’ Scott Weiland is also supposedly reuniting with STP, although I have as much faith in that as the rumor Led Zeppelin is secretly headlining Bonnaroo. I warned you this was old dude night!

If anyone who skims Buddyhead also reads books, you should grab some knowledge with this one. Not only does it have original scribblings from Lester Bangs and Greil Marcus, it’s the fucking story of Greg Shaw. If you’re not stoked on that alone, well…fuck you!

And yeah, Witch’s new album drops March 18th on Tee Pee Records. See, I don’t always go out on a sour note!
