Ryan Adams on the Henry Rollins Show

December 20th, 2007 by Scott Debauche

ra.jpg

This live performance on the Henry Rollins show of Ryan’s song “What Sin” speaks for itself. If you don’t think Ryan Adams and Cardinalsare KILLING IT here, then I am gonna have to question if you even like Rock N Roll…

Now I got a question, what album is this song on?

Ryan Adams & The Cardnalrs are on tour now!

  2. matthew Says:

‘what sin’ isn’t on an album but there’s a few decent versions out there of it if you search mp3 blogs.

  3. new lows Says:

wwwwwwwow! new lows? ryan adams? holy canoli, I don’t know what to say.
first oasis, pearl jam, and the verve, now this? getting old must really suck guys.

  4. travis Says:

Yeah sorry those people write SONGS… what would you rather see on here Mr. Tasteful?

  5. matthew Says:

i’m sure ‘new lows’ thinks this is bryan adams

  6. jack Says:

that was honestly the best part of my day

  7. rob Says:

so weird…i was just watchin this randomly on youtube and was wondering the same thing about which album this is on. hes channeling the ghost of neil young circa 1970. very tight.

  8. e Says:

‘holy canoli & the new lows’ would make a great band name. don’t ya think

  9. alex Says:

i prefer the other side of rock and roll, without the blues

i’m gonna have to question you’re definition of “killing it” because that didn’t resemble anything that comes to mind when i think kill

  10. Aaron B. Says:

what no blues?! Whats ROCKNROLL with no BLUES.

I saw this episode and they were good, NO KILL,but good. now I’m not a BIG Bryan or Ryan Adams[or a BUDDYHEAD ASS KISSER] so I cant talk shit like all you POSERS with your RcknRll dictionary, but come on naysayers name groups that are killing it,and maybe I’ll do blow off your nuts!

    START DROPPING NAMES.

  11. sharky Says:

Several really good cases of guitar face in this one.

If “Holy Canoli and the New Lows” ever play a show I will go. It doesn’t matter if it is in Antarctica. I’m there.

Fuckin’ sweet Batman shirt BTW Ryan.

  12. Uncle Scott Says:

Alex, you’re an idiot. Saying there is another “side” of Rock N Roll with no blues is about as ignorant of a statement as I’ve ever heard. You know what “killing it” means in the context here, it means giving 100% energy and effort live and not giving a fuck what anyone thinks. I’d say Ryan Adams and the Cardinals are doing just that here.

  13. Monty M. Says:

I don’t think there was any “killing” going on either. Thousands of people have proven they can play the blues. Sometimes its great and you can feel it and other times its just kinda there… and doesn’t really do anything. Neutral, if you will. The other side of rock n roll without the blues isn’t ignorant at all. Rock n roll has evolved over the years.. there are many different elements and styles… to think that the only good rock music is that which is based strictly on the blues seems more ignorant of a statement than what alex said.

  14. Uncle Scott Says:

Hey Monty - there’s quite a number of car manufacturers in existence now, but it all stems from the invention of the wheel. The blues is to ALL forms of rock n roll what the wheel is to automobiles. You’re an idiot as well. Go get a better record collection

  15. alex Says:

i’m really glad amateur music listener uncle scott (the name of my real uncle) jumped on the chance to bash me for saying something against blues but for rock and roll. i’m sorry i’m not down with stevie ray vaughn, the super bluesy side of the rolling stones, eric clapton and all that other shit. if i wanna hear the blues i’d rather listen to a black man, sorry. if i wanna hear some rock and roll that kills it i’ll listen to some white dudes that listened to the black dudes. fuck you elitist. my record collection rules and it doesn’t have anything i’ve heard a million times that puts me to sleep like ryan adams does. rock and roll is chuck berry and little richard rock and roll is nirvana, jesus and mary chain, smashing pumpkins, oasis, and the like. which do you prefer? i don’t care but you should recognize there are two sides, jerk off.

  16. Aaron B. Says:

Ahhh if you like Black man blues, you should pick up NEGRO PRISON BLUES music, all recorded by ALAN LOMAX, basically who is the dude that first started recording blues
and from what I hear Steve Albini would give his left nut too,[that dude is his idol], probably ????…….anyway I see your point Alex, I love me some white boy rcknrll too but then again theres alot that shouldnt rock.

    MERRY XMAS

  17. ryan r. Says:

ya know, i’m not a huge adams fan or anything, but the kid can write a catchy tune. that song “what sin” was a pretty big part of me getting into him again. when i was 19 i used to get fucked and listen to “when you’re young you get sad, you get high” all the time, along with elevator to hell.

point being, though…aquarium drunkard already beat you to this months ago. srry!

    - Ryan

  18. pseudo Says:

    Rockin….

  19. Monty M. Says:

Uncle Scott. Thats one of the worst analogies I’ve ever heard. I think you’d be better off saying that wheel is to car as GUITAR is to rock n roll.

Of course and undeniably the blues and the brothers who made it are at the roots of rock n roll but if you think that all great rock n roll bands are strictly based off the blues today , then you’re kinda trippin. If you don’t get Alex’ point then you’re just plain ignorant… and presumably are the one with the bogus record collection. (which no one cares about by the way)

Lastly, Ryan Adams has always been boring. Does that mean that he can’t sing or play? No. It just means that the noise and sounds he makes when he plays and sings have always just kinda been boring.

And again.. is the furthest thing from my mind when I think of someone “killing it.” I’ve seen homeless dude’s play on the streets that kill it more than this.. and seemingly with more SOUL.

Yeah the other key requirement for rock n roll is SOUL bro!

  20. Stoney Says:

This clip isn’t nearly as wack as I thought it would be.

  21. e Says:

Did you know they can trace all people back to Africa (we are all black, however far back)
So, yeah it’s gotta be the birthplace of the Blues!

  22. marso Says:

is this after season 1. havent seen after but goddam its great if they got rid of the blonde haired bimbo

    bitch couldnt even read properly

  23. travis Says:

If you ain’t backin the blues… you ain’t backin’ Led Zep… and if you ain’t backin’ Led Zep… get the fuck outta town.

  24. Monty M. Says:

I didn’t say anything about NOT backing the blues… just about not backing Ryan Adams.

Led Zep are one of, if not the best, rock band ever BUT lets not pretend that they weren’t pretty blatant in coppin a HUGE part of their style. Yeah, they did it right and all…

    But still TOTALLY copped it.

  25. e Says:

    That’s old news.
    Robert Johnson RIP.

  26. Monty M. Says:

    you’re old news.

  27. get over yourself Says:

    kill your idols.

  28. harrell Says:

i think this whole discussion is pretty ignorant. maybe at 25 i’m old but if someone thinks Ryan Adams was ‘killing it’ then that is their opinion. i do believe that Ryan Adams music appeals to an older crowd. it has much more in common with traditional rock n roll than say some spastic indie rock band. if you don’t like it. don’t listen to him. retreat back into your obscure little black holes and sob along to your records while they ‘kill it’ for you.

  29. john b. Says:

Oh, man. I’m 28, and I dig Ryan Adams. Apparently I’m now part of the older crowd. Shit.

Seriously, though, as to all the above sand-in-vagina nonsense, some people dig this kind of thing, some people don’t. As to Ryan killing it here, I have to agree (no matter what you’re into). Sometimes it just takes a few more years to figure that out (seeing as I spent years 12 - 19 of my life convinced that everything outside of hardcore - real hardcore, not chugga chugga shit - was crap).

  30. fuck Says:

ryan adams is the man and has always been the man. from anything in whiskeytown to his punk band the finger, homeboy is rad. when you’re backed by elton john, stephen king, willie nelson and henry rollins to name a few, i think that spells legit.

by the way this song was on a bonus disc for jacksonville city nights, which also has a sweet cover of ‘i still miss someone’

  31. jafar Says:

i still hate his fanbase of indie hipster girls that dont know neil young from neil diamond, and he’s a little whiny bitch, but he did slay it pretty hard, i have to admit.

  32. satisfied '75 Says:

    ryan adams nails it.

  33. dorothy chandler Says:

ryan adams? seriously? this is a joke right? hahaha, it’s funny…hahahaha….no wait it’s not funny at all.

  34. hank Says:

    weak man.

  35. Cam Says:

he looks like he’s on drugs. no wonder this is awesome.

  36. iwornmyelbows Says:

    Blueshammer!

  37. shawn Says:

Ryan Adams is rad as fuck. the dude fucking rips it on this song. The album version is on jacksonville city nights, a great record.
