Dave Gahan - Hourglass
Looks like the formalities are out the window with the singer of Depeche Mode these days. Homeboy has loosen up a bit and is now cool with us calling him Dave instead of David. I’m into it man. I feel like we’re buddies already anyways…
So… I just happened to catch the video for “Kingdom” on cable the other night after I attended an extremely mediocre acoustic Spiritualized show (Yeah, the one that cost me $40 and bored me to tears and I’m a huge fan who’s seen them about ten times… but enough of that now don’t worry, that’s gonna be a whole post itself real soon… I got a lot to tell Jason Spaceman) and I was pleasantly surprised at how good it was. In the video Dave is just cruising around town and where ever he goes it’s a fuckin’ rave. Now, I totally wanna hang out with this dude… he’s an instant party. Plus if you’re with this dude it’s like hanging out with a chick tracker-beam, which is never a bad thing. Girls love Dave.
Anyways, Dave’s new solo record is pretty fuckin’ awesome, I’m backing it. It’s not as good as the last Depeche Mode record, “Playing The Angel”, but then again we don’t have to watch Martin Gore dress up in that fuckin’ bird costume and pretend to play guitar either so I guess it depends on how you look at things.
Check out the video for “Kingdom” and download mp3s of “Deeper and Deeper” and the single version of “Kingdom” (which isn’t on the album). If having these on your Ipod doesn’t get you laid it’s a lost cause kid.

Oh and seeing as how it’s on topic… here’s my favorite Depeche Mode video ever.. “I Feel You”. Makes you wanna get a cowboy hat and head to the desert doesn’t it? Click here to watch cuz their label won’t let us embed this shit.

depeche mode = the creepeist, sexiest, gayest rockin’ band. At first I wasn’t into the single, but after I downloaded the WHOLE SONG on iTunes, it’s actually pretty rad. It’s no classic DMODE, but it reminds me of Playing the Angel. It’s fucking great…especially for dudes this old.

my own thoughts, as written for a local entertainment rag:
Damn this bitch is slooooow. Depeche Mode’s frontman drags ass through the majority of his second solo album, offering up the same kind of blippy narcoleptic balladry that made Ultra so tedious. Fortunately, the few exceptions are pretty exceptional. “Deeper and Deeper” is a shuffling industrial homage to humping, with disorienting synth lines and layered 2-packs-a-day vocals that exhibit a previously unheard intensity from the singer. It’s the kind of song you would expect from a guy who out-partied the junkies in Primal Scream on the Violator tour. Despite the track’s fresh approach, it doesn’t quite compensate for the rest of the album’s sluggishness. It should be noted that Depeche Mode’s seminal hit “Enjoy the Silence” was originally written as a ballad, before former collaborator Alan Wilder picked up the pace and turned it into the song we’ve come to know and love. Most of the tracks on Hourglass would have definitely benefited from similar treatment.

“Barrel of a Gun” is better video. Anton Corbjin was fully tripping. Get on over to youtube and check it out.

Cool shit Travis. LOL about the cowboy hat, he wore one in “Personal Jesus”, video too. I like “Enjoy the silence” tho. Only David can walk threw the video dressed like a King, and pull it off.

“I Feel You” is great Travis, but the single greatest Depeche Mode video was the Victoria’s Secret commercial that used “Useless” from Ultra.
Remember:
DM + Victoria’s Secret Models = Every Man’s Greatest Dream
About Martin’s costume choices on the recent “Touring the Angel” World Tour: yeah it’s a bird costume, but even you’ve got to admit that it’s better than his ultra androgynous “gay biker” look he had going on during the Music for the Masses/Violator era, lol.
