This is gonna read a lot like Buddyhead did back in 2001

November 30th, 2007 by Travis Keller

limp-bizkit.jpg

Give Fred Durst a call on his cell phone at 310 210 0119 and ask him what it’s like to have a teenie weenie. Tell that douche that Buddyhead sent you. By the way, we only know about his tiny unit cuz he made the world look at that peanut when he leaked his weak sex tape. Good move bro! About as good as calling your record Starfish Hotdog Water” or whatever the fuck that was called. While you at it, sign Fred up for every mailing list you can and shoot him an email at fdurst@mac.com asking why there’s not much going on over at http://www.limpbizkit.com/.

If you’re a long time reader of Buddyhead this post may feel like deja vu. Sorry, we’ve been consciously trying to steer away from childish things like this that we’ve already done so many times in the past but this one was just too funny to pass up. For those of you who are a bit younger and newer readers of “The Head”, this might not even make sense to you.

Let me explain… Way back in the day in the late 90’s and early 2000’s, millions of people were actually tricked into thinking rap-metal (or nu-metal) was cool. It’s hard to believe now that at one time Limp Bizkit was the biggest band in the world. Yeah those dudes got paid and laid for being morons! Well maybe it’s not that hard to believe.. Korn still sells a shitload of records and they’re pretty much as musically retarded as Limp Bizkit cept their singer is a tad less annoying than Fred Durst.

In case you forgot just how annoying Freddy D and Limp Bizkit are or if you just need to get angry before you call him… check these youtube turds.

And remember this shit? When Wes Borlan left and they had the other guy on gutiar, I had totally forgotten about this era.

Let’s Paint TV

November 30th, 2007 by Das Shelbot

Lets Paint TVMy buddy Gabriel who wrote that very accurate line on how the new Joe Lally album is turned me on to Let’s Paint TV… I think this is the new way to go for Buddyhead and for future reviews. Yeah, we can talk about negativity and I can complain about certain bands/major labels and stuff but seriously, we’re all in a sea of negativity trying to make things positive and creative. I want Thom Yorke to be happy and make interesting babies. And I want the insecure emo-kid to wipe off his/her make-up and feel good about who he/she is. Really! So take a moment and watch this weird piece of California culture. Long Live John Kilduf! WE SUPPORT YOU! Or at least I do… in fact, Travis, he will be my first interview - maybe phone interview and we’ll podcast it!

Dave Gahan contest and winner of the SIRUS contest

November 30th, 2007 by Travis Keller

dave_gahan.jpg

We’ve got some Dave Gahan stuff to give away. To win this shit send an email to TravisKeller@gmail.com. with “DAVE GAHAN” in the subject and in the body include your full name, address and tell me why you should be the winner for this fine musical merchandise. Speaking of… here’s what you’ll win:

1 Vinyl Plus Edition of Hourglass & 1 Hourglass CD Deluxe Edition (includes DVD featuring exclusive Hourglass documentary, 4 live performances and the video for “Kingdom”).

We also have a winner of the SIRIUS radio and Bruce Springsteen’s new record “Magic”… And the winner is:

Joseph Popiolkowski wrote:

“Hey Travis,

I should win the Sirius radio because the only thing I’ve ever won in my life is two tickets to a Tony Bennett show (i got to play guitar on stage with Everclear once, but that’s another story). I had to name that song and the song was “I think we’re alone now” by Tommy James and the Shondells. I couldn’t even go to the show and gave away the tickets. How could I “name that tune”? because I didn’t know jack shit about good music until I started reading Buddyhead. I didn’t even know how fucking rad Bruce’s “nebraska” was until i read about it in Buddyhead. I used to think 311 was cool…what the fucky? But that was years ago. BH turned my life around. I remember reading the CD reviews with your Axl rating system and laughing at Axl all gacked out. Everytime I hear Joe Escalante on 103.1 I think about your Vandals review where you said “Oh, look out, I think I just stepped in a pile of Vandals CDs.” Anyway, I should win because L.A. radio basically sucks and I live in West Hollywood so I can ride my bike over to your place and pick it up! And I’ll buy you a beer if I ever see you at the El Rey.
peace,
Joe Pops”

Shat live record & tour dates with The Dillinger Escape Plan

November 30th, 2007 by Travis Keller

shatlive.jpgThere’s a lot going on in the world of Jeff Wood and his band, SHAT. First off, their digital-only live album “Alive From Cunt” just came out. We’re pretty sure it holds the record for “most times a band says the word faggot on a live record”. Click here to buy it.

I’ve also been informed that their longtime drummer, Grandpa, has left the group was unknown reasons. I was hoping that meant Mangina would be returning to the kit, but it seems they’ve already got a brand new drummer (who’s name I don’t know yet but I’m pretty sure it’s gonna rule).

If you hit up their myspace page you’ll that Shat’s has shows booked for a tour in early 2008 and will be opening a string of east coast dates opening for The Dillinger Escape Plan in December. You’re not gonna wanna miss these shows, trust me.

Glee As Fuck

November 30th, 2007 by Vishal

Blue Ribbon Glee ClubMy name is Vishal and I don’t really write that many posts here. I’m the web guru who makes all that you see work and don’t get paid a dime for it. But that doesn’t really matter. I’ve got a cozy job and appreciate Buddyhead and all that it stands for yadda yadda.

Anyways…a close friend of mine just told me about a group called the Blue Ribbon Glee Club which I thought would be worth mentioning. These guys hail themselves as Chicago’s first punk rock choir. Pretty badass if you consider how many punk rock choirs exist…I don’t know…very few to none? These dudes do a pretty entertaining a cappella cover of Fugazi’s “Waiting Room” as well as “Where Is My Mind?” and “Spanish Bombs”. If someone threw some bucks at these guys they might be able to record something as nice as TV On The Radio’s rendition of “Mr. Grieves”.

White Light

November 30th, 2007 by Das Shelbot

060821_supersystem.jpgSo last night I saw my favorite band Antelope from DC play and it was probably one of the best shows I’ve ever seen… by them as a band and in general when it comes to humans playing instruments. They were extremely solid after their European tour and left my jaw dropped, I coincidentally left it lying on the floor at Black Cat. The three lads are indeed honing their skills and their vocal personas are becoming stranger yet more focused unlike anything I have ever seen. A must see if you like (in their own words) “minamlist and meditative punk music”!But before I post their tour dates I would like to take this time to post a song by Supersystem, which was Justin Moyer’s (from Antelope) previous band. Now I wasn’t a big Supersystem fan before as they were more dance punky when I saw them and it just made me tired… HOWEVER, they did win me over with their last album, “A Million Microphones”. Enjoy this choice cut, “White Light” and feel free to purchase it so they can buy some pizzas. And now go see ANTELOPE on tour and tell them Buddyhead sent you!

We are pleased to announce the latest addition to the Buddyhead roster: Jubilee

November 28th, 2007 by Travis Keller

jubilee_myspace.jpg

Jubilee is a new rock n’ roll band from Los Angeles, California. The group consists of:

- Aaron North (Nine Inch Nails, The Icarus Line)
vocals, guitar
- Michael Shuman (Queens of the Stone Age, Wires On Fire)
bass, vocals
- Evan Weiss (Wires On Fire)
guitar, backing vocals
- Loren Shane Humphrey (The Willowz)
drums

Yeah, it’s a family affair. Jubilee’s first 7-inch / cd single “Rebel Hiss” from their forthcoming debut album will be released on January 21st, 2008. This release also happens to be a sort of “landmark” as such for us, seeing as how it’s Buddyhead’s 25th. Yeah, who knew we’d make it this far either?

Both formats of the single will include exclusive B-sides unavailable on the full-length record. The band recorded the songs at their own studio, Shabbey Road, and then Nick Launay (Grinderman, Arcade Fire, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, PIL, Gang of Four, Killing Joke, The Birthday Party, Supergrass) and Ed Monsef (Queens of the Stone Age, UNKLE, The Duke Spirit) mixed the stuff.

A digital format of the single will also be available, as well as a very limited edition, hand-numbered 7-inch version, which will include an exclusive B-side unavailable on any of the other formats. This 7-inch will ONLY be available at the shows on Jubilee’s UK tour in January 2008. The tour where this lil gem will be sold, and where these guys will be cuttin’ their teeth by playing their first live shows together ever, includes the following dates… As well as many, many more to be announced soon:

January 27th - BRIGHTON @ PRESSURE POINT
January 28th - CARDIFF @ CLWB IFOR BACH
January 30th - LONDON @ BARFLY

The band is more than halfway done recording their album, which to me, sounds something like The Replacements, The Stone Roses, Neil Young, Blur, Jane’s Addiction, Bob Dylan, Creedence Clearwater Revival, and The Verve, all sliced ‘n diced together quite nicely. And… For some reason, the band chose to record this album and single with a dozen different drummers. Some of these friends include:

Carla Azar (Autolux)
Josh Freese (Devo, A Perfect Circle, Nine Inch Nails, eh… everybody)
Kevin Haskins (Bauhaus, Love & Rockets, Tones On Tail)
Josh Homme (Queens of the Stone Age, Eagles of Death Metal)

And many, many more… And the album is still only about halfway done, so keep it in your pants.

That is all you really need to know for now. If you wanna take a bite into the even juicier tid-bits, then check out the band’s website at www.Jubilee.LA or their Myspace page at www.Myspace.com/Jubileeband for additional tour dates, ticket information, and even more details on the single. Both websites might look somewhat sparse for the next few days, but things will shape up quickly. Oh, by the way… I’ll be coming on the tour too, and I wanna go off. Help ME, help YOU. See ya soon. Cheers.

The Open Mind - “The Open MInd”

November 25th, 2007 by Travis Keller

700px-openmind.jpg

This record makes me feel fine. How do I feel? I feel fiiiiiiiine! Do yourself a solid and snatch this record up compadre. That is, if you can find it. It took me forever to track down my copy and now that I’ve got it… it hasn’t left my stereo. I first heard about The Open Mind via the Nuggets II boxset, where their song “Magic Potion” is alongside other under-appreciated rock bands like Kaleidoscope, The Pretty Things, Small Faces, The Missing Links, The Outsiders, Os Mutantes, The Move, and others. I’d be surprised if you told me you were a fan of rock n’ roll but weren’t hip to the Nuggest box sets… both one and two are “must owns”. Less talk more rock is my motto, so take this mp3 of “Magic Potion” for a spin and check out the guitar sound these cats have. Shit rules. If anyone reading this has any records by these dudes that they want to share with me, please email me. I’m gonna tear up some chicken vindaloo now, excuse me.

CD Trader: Amoeba Light

November 24th, 2007 by Matt Hausfater

storepictures006w560h420.jpg

I live in the Valley, man. It gets hectic. Encino Little League. Fromin’s Deli. CD Trader. Listen up, over-the-hill yuppsters. Hidden in a shabby strip-mall that shares a wall with El Paso Bar-B-Q sits The CD Trader, one of my true great Valley finds. Not everybody has time to stroll down to Amoeba for a “who’s who” at the record store. Who wants to shop with Johnny Knoxville anyway? It is funny, though, to see Keith Morris fingering the Ace of Base section.

I learned to share in Kindergarten. I’ll let you in on my secret. I’ve secretly been shopping here with my Dad for a few years now. The guys who work there are total record-store dicks, which is also a plus. Sometimes I have to remind them, “Hey! Shithead! The fact that you work in a record store does not mean you are a rock star! You are the lowest of the low. Now tell me how much store credit I can get for my Bad Boys II DVD and three Paul Oakenfold records!”

Shopping for records together is our thing. My brother comes along. We all make fun of each other for their respective musical tastes—If I had a dollar for every SEAL record my Dad bought I’d be richer than Aaron. Anyway, I went to “The Trader” with my bro and Dad today, after I shit for the fourth time since carving the Turkey last night (it was the ham that actually did me in).

Here’s what I’ve recently purchased:

Spoon: Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga

This record is pop perfection. It might be a bit over-produced (the horns on “Cherrybomb”) but it’s all good clean rock and roll. I really dig “The Ghost of You Lingers;” it is very moody and wild without being to loud/hard. This is the “sonic ooze” that the weird dude (the one with dreadlocks) who got shit-canned from Wilco was talking about in the rock-doc, I Am Trying To Break Your Heart. After seeing these guys with Kool Keith at the Music Box a few months ago I’ve really gotten into them. I was told to start with Gimme Fiction or Kill The Moonlight (my personal favorite). Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga is right up there. I’d even say suggesting starting with this new record instead of the previous ones. Eat it up!

The Crystal Method: VEGAS

Okay. Okay. So I might’ve missed the boat on this one, but who cares, man. The first track makes me want to eat pussy for hours and hours in the dark. Duh: “Trip Like I Do” is a classic electronic single. I don’t have to tell you. Most music is heading in this direction anyway; why not go straight to the source? Like killing a drug kingpin. Which is what I sort of want to think this record is about. Offing your boss and taking what’s in the safe and risking it all on 23 Black in Vegas.

M.I.A.: K A L A

I fucking hated this chick when she first started making headlines. Her single “Gang-a-Lang” made me want to stick a number two pencil in my hear and twist it until the eraser broke off. But dude, this new shit is the hotness. Track 1, “Bambu Banga” makes me feel empowered, like I could fuck a black chick…maybe even M.I.A…cha!..right! Then maybe she’d put a little joke about me on the liner-notes on the next record. Or maybe even my picture (footnote Jack Black in High Fidelity). My favorite song would have to be “Paper Planes.” It’s not a banger it’s a ballad with synth. The Pet Shop Boys go surfing with André3000 before meeting Gwen Stefani for a spliff in a Jamaican hut down the beach…one of them had an 808…than Timbaland stopped by to eat…he head fresh mangos and dank herb…that’s what this record sounds like. It’s a great fucking record. Literally—bang to it.

Jackson Browne: Saturate Before Using

This is a classic. I needed to own it. I was a total ass-clown for just having purchased it now. Whatever. Better late than never. “Jamaica Say You Will,” “Doctor My Eyes,” “Under the Falling Sky.” You know the drill. Henry Diltz took the cover photo; the original pressing of the LP has actual rivets on the top. Killer score.

The Police: Synchronicity

I have all the other albums, most of them on vinyl and compact disc. But I didn’t have this one. It’s pretty interesting. I think they’re trying to be Pink Floyd with all the electro-sounds and chimes and weird words. I mean, this is Sting we’re talking here. He’s not doing Syd Barrett shit. At most he’s having prolonged orgasms after sex, if at all. “Murder By Numbers” is always a crowd pleaser; I think I might like it more in my car. Only time will tell. People just don’t make tunes like this anymore. It’s funky, sexy, and made by WHITE dudes. Stewart Copeland kills it. The snare is on the AND BEAT of the 2 on “King of Pain.” Try playing air-drums to this…it’s fucking impossible. But it’s awesome. Nobody is as cool as the Police.

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers: Southern Accents

I love Full Moon Fever. I have Highway Companion (which sucks) and I have the greatest hits. I thought this would be the next apropos purchase in their discography. I guessed wrong. When I noticed that Jimmy Iovine had produced a few tracks, I knew I had fucked up. There are too much horns on this thing, man! Petty…what gives? I know it was 1985 and all, but it sounds like you guys just invented snorting coke with black chicks on this record. No way Campbell fully backed this thing. Every song is overproduced, over done, overblown. It one word: overkill.

Anyway…Whether or not you agree with my musical tastes, you can do some record-picking yourself.

Here’s who won the free IPod Nano from MOJO HD

November 22nd, 2007 by Travis Keller

Here’s the winner of the Mojo HD contest, click here for their website and click here to see the original post with the rules to this contest and whatnot.

We’d like to thank Mojo HD, London Live and everyone who entered.

Brian Carnahan is our winner. He’ll be sent a brand new IPod Nano and a $50 Gift Certificate to Amazon.com. Here’s what Brian Carnahan wrote that gave him a one way ticket to winnerville:

Well, I really haven’t seen London Live, but any show that has Primal Scream on gets my approval. Really, I should get those prizes because I’m a poor dishwasher trying to pay my bills. That Nano would help me while away the 12 hour shifts I put in at work, and that Amazon gift card would allow me to buy some new music (something I haven’t been able to afford in awhile).

-Brian Carnahan

PS. I started my own band now. Check out our shitty
demo at myspace.com/blacktocommarefuckingdead
Better stuff will be recorded soon.

Travis Does John Lennon / Thom Yorke Pants

November 21st, 2007 by Das Shelbot

Travis Band PicRemember that band from Glasgow, Scotland from the 90s, Travis? Well I almost forgot about them… they had babies didn’t tour for a while and kind of chilled out and spoke with strong accents around Sauciehall Street (That is pronounced “Suck-E-Hall Street” - i know, I was lost there one) in kilt-land. Since I don’t really read any music press other than Buddyhead I didn’t know they put out a new record this May but I did know that there is some site called poundbeers dot com??? Uhhhhh… The new album is called ‘The Boy With No Name’, which comes from the singer not knowing the name of his baby boy yet and sending a picture to a friend entitling it “The boy with no name”. I like that! Upon listening to some tunes I found around I was happily surprised they are continuing in the tradition of writing the most honest and non-pretentious guitar pop songs around. I always thought they were better than Radiohead… they had those comparisons because of similar vocal theatrics but I still think Thom Yorke wishes he was Jeff Buckley and couldn’t survive a tour in a van.

And now a brief letter to: Mr. Thom Yorke, after watching that silly DVD you put out of having a “hard time” on the road it made me stop caring… and may I rant a little more about your Radiohead releasing an album for ‘donation’ was indeed a clever marketing ploy. Realize that you are selling 160k versions of the songs and you know it’s not that revolutionary when you already have had $100,000 of dollars behind you in marketing money and you make bank at shows… who really cares. You or no ex-major label star is making any sort of revolutionary statement at this point with all this. I think success stories like Clap Your Hands And Say Yeah are much more interesting and realistic for most bands out there despite that specific example leveraging the oh so imbalance of Pitchfork Media making the taste for the kiddies today… but I digress… my letter to you Mr. Thom Yorke is done.

Back to Travis, the new album is great and they recently recorded a John Lennon cover for a Darfur-Save The World comp thingy… Download it here and buy their new album even though they are still locked into a major label or heck, download it somewhere and go to a show. These are top-notch dudes in my opinion.

AA Bondy @ Hotel Cafe - Hollywood - Nov. 26th

November 21st, 2007 by Travis Keller

I’ve written about how much I like the music that AA Bondy makes a few times before on this site. In case you missed it or didn’t believe me and you still have not picked up one of the best records of 2007 which is his album “American Hearts”… do so immediately. You can get it from a record store (if they still have those where you live), Mr. Bondy’s myspace page, his label or itunes. If are lucky enough to live in LA, you just got even luckier because this dude is playing an early show at 7pm this coming Monday (November 26th, 2007). The (unplugged) rock show is going down at one of our favorite places to see live music, The Hotel Cafe (which just so happens to be owned by our friend Marko… he used to write the Buddyhead Sex Advice, but he’s like too busy now or something). If AA’s live show is anything like his album or the few youtube videos I’ve seen, Monday should be a pretty fucking cool night. Until then… check out these mp3s, buy his album and watch these live videos from last year at the Old Louisville Coffeehouse. Oh, and if you check his myspace page, he’s also playing other cities like Woodstock, New York City, London and Chicago.

“Killed Myself When I Was Young/ American Hearts” live

“Vice Rag” live

Here’s who got the free Beatles shit…

We’ve finally got a winner for The Beatles “Help” contest and her name is Lauren Verby from San Francisco, California! Sweet job Lauren!

You’ll soon find what’s known as a prize package in the mail. It’ll include a copy of the new Beatles “Help” dvd, a Beatles T-shirt and a limited edition CD also by The Beatles. You’re stoked! Here’s what she emailed in that transformed her from a regular old loser like you into a big shiny winner, take notes failures…

Here are my reasons why I feel I deserve to win this fucking dvd:

1. I have been down with the “Head” since I was 19 years old, I am now
27 so you have been sucking up my time for ages now
2. I was on the epic messageboard and remember when Courtney Love
spent all day and all night writing the most insane (yet fascinating)
rants that made no fucking sense because she was a crackwhore, and had
the worst spelling and grammar I have ever seen.
3.I miss Marko’s Sex Column , and since he stopped writing it there
has been this deep void in my little jewish heart.
4.because I’m for some reason compelled to type this at 6 in the morning
5.I need a new DVD ,all my porn is getting old, and because I much
like Buddyhead ..I am for the children.

ok back to sleep, I hope you will consider me :)
