The Duke Spirit just released four new songs as the “Ex-Voto” EP. You can buy it as a 10 inch record, CDEP or a digital download. If you live in America it’s not available in stores or on Itunes. But fear not, cuz us Yankees can still get it through good old fashion mail-order! Click here to check out the E Card, where you can stream the tracks and order this fine overseas product. While you’re at it, hit The Duke Spirit myspace page @ myspace.com/thedukespirit, and check out their recent appearance on Henry Rollin’s show here.
Hey Kids, this is borderline short-notice, if you happen to find yourself in Los Angeles tonight (Sunday October, 28th 2007) get it together champ and come on down to The El Rey Theatre and see Roky Erickson! And if you wanna kill two birds with one stone by buying me a beer at the same time, tonight is your night cuz I’ll be DJing some sweet rock n’ roll tunes before as well as between the bands (1990’s are also playing). I’ve been a pretty immersed fan of Mr. Erickson for a while now, so I’m really fuckin’ excited to see homeboy play to say the least. And my fingers are crossed that “Night Of The Vampire” is part of tonight’s set. Don’t fuck me on that dude… play it!
For those of you who haven’t already seen the rockumentary titled “You’re Gonna Miss Me”, I highly recommend doing so cuz I think it’s one of the best films ever made about rock n’ roll (aside from that sweet movie Marky Mark made called Rockstar). The film covers everything in Roky’s bizarre life including his personal battles with drug addiction (heroin and LSD binges), mental illness (struggles with schizophrenia), music “career” (including the 13th Floor Elevators), stays at Austin State Hospital and Rusk State Hospital for the Criminally Insane and his eventual recovery and return to performing music. It’s a good one dudes, trust me. Buy or borrow or rent or netflix or steal or whatever that DVD.
In the haze of craziness from everything that’s been going on here at Buddyhead this past week… you know the usual… new websites, new writers, & Aaron’s new male life partner… it looks like we fucked up once again and somehow forgot to tell you about the new Oasis (digital) single! Yeah, we don’t know how we forgot to tell you about the greatest current rock band’s “new” song either. Even if it is just a left over song that didn’t make the cut for their last album, it’s still way better than anything else we’ve heard lately.
So anyhoo… On October 23rd, Oasis released a new song called “Lord Don’t Slow Me Down” which features Noel on vocals and is also the theme song to the rockumentary film of the same name that’ll be coming out on DVD real soon. We recommend that you buy the single from Itunes by clicking here, dime your stereo and head-bang while brother Noel kicks you down some knowledge about being tired, on drugs and hungover. We’re sure you won’t be able to relate… Oh, and check out the video dudes…
Now, let’s get some opinions… what do you guys think of the song? The video? The forth-coming DVD?
Yeap! Spiritualized are jumping the pond and coming to the US to play some rock shows. Well, kinda. They’re coming over here to play some “acoustic mainlines” shows. We can’t confirm exactly how “rock” they’ll be, but that’s besides the point. At the shows, J. Spacemen will be accompanied by strings, gospel singers (which makes us think maybe he’s in his “Illusions-era” now) and the setlist will feature a mix of Spiritualized jams, Spacemen 3 cuts, and the music of others. Sounds pretty sweet to me man. Check this dude out when he comes to your town (that’s if you live in one of the good big ones) and don’t forget your tablets.

As you can probably tell from the new look we’re rockin’, we’ve made a few changes around here. The obvious one being the way this place looks and is organized. Yeah Mom, we’re finally getting organized! Stick with us as we work out the bugs with this new site. We’re slowly figuring out how to work this thing out and will have some fresh new content up here ASAP. We’ve got a new batch of writers/friends as well as an editor guy that will be making sure this place gets updated a lot more frequently that it has been lately. If you’re interested in helping out around here (and don’t expect to ever get paid or complimented) then shoot Jon Weston (he’s our new editor guy) an email at jon@buddyhead.com. We’re looking for writers, photographers, illustrators and any other nerds who think they have something to offer us. In the meantime, keep rockin’ in the free world.
I’m way into this whole “bands giving away their music for free” thing. Today you can add The Verve to that list because they released a new jam via the NME.com titled “The Thaw Sessions”, which is prolly a reference to ‘Deep Freeze’ (that was a bonus track on their last album ‘Urban Hymns’). It’s a little over 14 minutes long, which is why I called it a “jam”, and sounds more like the first two records than it does their last one…. which is fuckin’ the right direction for these blokes if you ask me. Can’t wait to hear more. Get into it! The word on the street is we’ll see these dudes live at Coachella in 2008. Now if they could only lock down Oasis for that gig as well…
The Cassettes just finished an animated music video for their song Rogue Gnome, which you can find on their critically acclaimed album ‘Neath The Pale Moon! If you haven’t checked out that bad boy yet, we highly recommend you do so now by clicking HERE. Either way, check out this video… it was brought to life by Stephen Guidry and illustrated by Shelby Cinca, both dudes are in The Cassettes.
This U2 bootleg has not left my stereo for the past few weeks. And that’s because theis thing fuckin’ slays! It’s from the Zoo TV tour (I think) but 90% of the songs they play are from their “Achtung Baby” record (which just so happens to be my favorite U2 record cuz it’s the darkest and the most fucked up). I don’t know much about this bootleg, but I’m gonna guess the band made it cuz of the interludes and interviews included with it. Anyone know the skinny on this bad boy? Download a few songs or the whole thing as a zip file… It’s all about choices dude. Have it your way, like Burger King.
This came out back in May of 1998 and features “Birthday” off the “Munki” record as well as the b-side “Hide Myself” which is only on this slab of vinyl. It’ll prolly be on the 4xCD boxset these grumpy old men are putting out in February next year on Rhino called “The Power Of Negative Thinking: B-Sides and Rarities”. Can’t wait for that little fucker. JAMC are playing the Wiltern on October 23rd with Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, should be killer. You can buy tickets HERE.
The newest UNKLE record, “War Stories”, fuckin’ rules. If you haven’t bought it yet, do so now. And if you haven’t seen em live yet, make sure you do when they cruise through your area. I was lucky enough to get to see them three times this summer in Europe (some photos here) and I’m going to get to see them twice more when they play the Echoplex in LA (26 Oct) and Vegoose in Vegas (28 Oct). Super fan I guess. Either way, I can’t fuckin’ wait. Check the new video for “Hold My Hand” which is one of my favorite songs (the other one being “Morning Rage” which I posted last week) and the video for their first single “Burn My Shadow”.Fuck yeah man.
A Place to Bury Strangers are the self proclaimed “Loudest band in New York”. For the record, I’m backing any band that wants to be the loudest band anywhere. Being loud is cool. I kept reading that these dudes sounded like The Jesus and Mary Chain so I finally got around to listening to them. And well, they kinda sound like that… Maybe they’d sound more like the JAMC if they didn’t write such catchy songs. APTBS have quite aways to go in the songwriting department, they pass in the feedback and cool sounds department though. Either way this record is pretty good, better than most new things I’ve heard lately… even if their band name sounds like something I read in Alternative Press.

This should be called "The Soulsavers with Mark Lanegan", because the Soulsavers were already a group before this record. Aside from the lack of his name in the title, Mark kicks ass on this record. You’ll find his voice on most of the songs that make up "It’s Not How Far You Fall, It’s The Way You Land", which is one of the best records I’ve heard that’s come out this year. The past few weeks, it has been my "Sunday Morning" record. Plus, their Stone’s cover ("No Expectations") fuckin’ kills! Hit their website for upcoming tour dates, news and anything else you could possibly want. http://www.thesoulsavers.com/
Graveyard reminds me of Soundgarden, Black Sabbath & and dudes with long hair who always wear jean jackets. You might wanna get into the Angry Jesus style. Check out their song "Thin Line" from their record that’s coming out Febuary 8th on Tee Pee Records and then hit their myspace page for more songs @ http://www.myspace.com/graveyardsongs.
I’ve been listening to a lot of these later era records from The Church for some reason. They’re pretty cool for the most part. So far, this one from 2006 is my favorite. Check these couple of songs out and post what do you guys think… Are you backing this?
And what do you guys think of this song called "The Draft"? It’s by The Nova Saints, from their "The Draft EP" (as is another song called "Far Out" which Nick McCabe from The Verve remixed), which you can buy directly from the band themselves at their website (http://www.myspace.com/novasaints). Yes, that means they’re unsigned. Someone with a label sign these dudes or something. Make a move.
Oasis is the best rock n’ roll band we currently have on planet earth and "Lord Don’t Slow Me Down" is their new single that comes out digitally on October 21st. If you’re good at math, that plus that means it’s the best new rock single. You might remember it as the theme song from their movie of the same title, that is if you saw it when they screened it at Noel’s solo shows last year. If you didn’t it’s coming out on DVD sometime really soon too. Either way, it’s the "Lord Don’t Slow Me Down" is the first new material Oasis has put out in three years and I can’t wait to have the bloody thing. Check out the video below and click here if you wanna pre-order it.
