The Duke Spirit - “Cuts Across The Land”
I posted The Duke Spirit’s single "Lion Rip" (off the album "Cuts Across The Land") and some BBC sessions (as well as a BBC interview) on here a couple months ago. But someone requested this, so here’s some more of The Duke Spirit kids. Now whoever said Buddyhead wasn’t nice? We’re like mother fucking Santa Clause over here and shit. This is their single "Cuts Across The Land" with "Souvenir" as the b side . This baby came out a little while before their full length did. Well, at least in other countries it did. They’re on Loog in the UK but somehow they’re on Interscope in America. And the douche bags over at Interscope Records are too busy making sure "artists" like Ashlee Simpson are hiring the right songwriters to realize they have a band like this on their label. Yeah, you can’t even buy this stuff in America as of right now. But you can order it from their website. They’ve even got some really cool & tasteful music videos on their website too. Someone over at Interscope should hire me to A&R just this band because whoever is in charge of that shit now is TOTALLY BLOWING IT! It makes me a little sad that in this country, millions of dollars are being pumped into bands like The Killers, The Bravery, Good Charlotte and all the other shit out there whatever it’s all called…. yet The Duke Spirit’s album won’t even be released… Oh and the singer of this band is my new favorite female singer, she’s got the being cool part down too. She’s also got a great interview in this weeks NME where she talks shit on pretty much every band out there right now which makes her even cooler.

On a side note, I wanted to point out that this page is written by a pretty good sized list of people now, thank you to all of them for making this place even cooler. Usually Buddyhead is just Aaron and myself (with the occasional help from others), but this page is something new and we’ve asked several of our friends to write for it as well. Not including myself of course, here’s everyone who gets to run their mouths about music they like on this page:
Dave Clifford (Red Sparowes/Starvations/Pleasure Forever)
Shelby Cinca (Decahedron/Frodus/The Cassettes)
Steve DeLuca (Gayrilla Biscuits/Work Sucks)
Aaron North (Nine Inch Nails/The Icarus Line)
John Stanier (Battles/Helmet)
Sam James Velde (Bluebird/Cold Sweat Records)
Christian Wabschall (400 Blows)
Evan Weiss (Wires On Fire)

I had to fuckin’ order their full-length for like 25 bucks. Way worth it though. That B-side is sick too.
Speaking of the Bravery, are they not the worst band in existence right now? They’re like an amalgalm (sp?) of everything shitty in the 80’s: New Wave, the remnants of disco, and fucking Morrissey (Fuck that guy, especially for saying that Bowie sucks; Morrissey’s best album couldn’t lick the peanuts outta Bowie’s wide asshole)
Thanks for posting this, tis the goods.

You’re kinda the man now, Mike. I request either souls she said, ink and dag, or the hunches. Thanks.

i downloaded this whole thing on soulseek. i didn’t even know the album was out overseas, i thought it was a leak. needless to say it’s pretty damn good and it’s a shame that i won’t be able to get it domestically anytime soon.

Ryan, e-mail me if you want the souls she said EP, or better yet, buy it from Buddyhead. It’s awesome. It sounds like The Strokes except less active. Those Strokes dudes go insane on stage.
The Hunches are on tour right now, but those dumasses don’t update their shows page, so just guess a club and date for when they’re coming through your city.

This question is for the British fans: Are the Duke Spirit at least popular in England? Essentially, do they have enough “buzz” to warrant a US release?
May 30th, 2005 at 12:54 pm
I seen them on mtv2 over here and they’ve been mentioned in the NME a few times. The videos for their 2 singles look quite flash so there must be some money being spent on them.

you can get both the 2xLP and the 2cd version of Cuts Across the Land for like 27 quid in california. its import, so thats why its so expensive, but the 2cd version comes with “a disc of rarities,” or some shit. does anyone have a copy of Roll Spirit Roll, on cd (i heard it was deleted)?

Man Travis, this is some solid stuff! too bad their on Interscope, they should have learned from Rocket From the Crypt. . . .

they are kinda popular over here, they recently played the Astoria or are just about to, and thats 1000 capacity venue. There has been a lot of print interviews with them too in the last couple of weeks Going to see them play with Autolux in July, going to be great.

A friend of mine does reviews for magazines and she had this. I totally snatched it off of her. I believe it even has a bonus track or something (Called “The Dark is Light Enough”), either way the album kills.

what happened with interscope and rftc?
June 2nd, 2005 at 5:33 am
I actually just got back from a trip to London and one of the first things I did was pick up this album (with the 2nd disc of rarities). They definitely have some popularity over there since it was being charted in most shops. Anyways, it’s a fucking great album and everyone should definitely pick it up. Thanks a lot to Travis and Buddyhead for turning me on into this group and for this whole website to begin with.
- I hear Autolux is going to tour with NIN and Queens of the Stone Age this fall? I hope so
June 2nd, 2005 at 7:34 pm
Autolux is on tour right now with the Raveonettes, I think.

Yeah, but who wants to see a back asswards version of the white stripes.
June 8th, 2005 at 12:53 pm
wow. The Spirit owns soul and hole. If their shit aint released by september(im guessing december at best with the fuckin bros at interscope running shit) i will have to sell my soul and pay the extra 10$ and buy it online. i mean, what else am i going to spend 10$ on? I can go a saturday without pot.
June 10th, 2005 at 2:32 am
where’s the best place to buy this bands stuff? anyone know?
June 10th, 2005 at 11:31 am
You can wait it out for a U.S. release, or spend $25 to import it on Amazon or something of that sort. Unless someone has any other ideas? That’s how i got mine and i got it pretty quick.
