This years South By Southwest is going to be great!(?) And we’re not talking about any of the bands playing (besides the ones on our label), it’s going to be great solely because Jeff Wood will be in town. So today, Aaron and Travis are piling into a rented car with Ofer (we tricked him into it, he’s the only one old enough) and are heading toward the steaming bullhole of our nation known as TexASS. If anyone wants to buy us drinks or drugs that lives somewhere off the 10 between Cali and Texas; or if you live in Texas and simply would like to meet the legend known as Jeff Wood, you can reach us via email ([email protected]) or you can just look for Jeff Wood walking around in his Shat costume.
Your Enemies Friends from Los Angeles will be playing a show in Austin, Texas for the South by Southwest festival on Wednesday, March 13th, at The Metro. The band goes on at Midnight… don’t be late. Their “Wiretap EP” will be released through Buddyhead in the coming months, and they will be hitting the studio this summer to record their full length debut with Alex Newport (At The Drive In, The Icarus Line, God Head Silo, The Melvins), also to be released through Buddyhead. The band will also be playing some shows on the way home with Pretty Girls Make Graves and The Blood Brothers and selling a limited edition, hand numbered, “tour edition” version of “The Wiretap ep”. Don’t fuck this up.Your Enemies Friends on the road:

The Icarus Line will also be playing a SXSW show on Friday, March 15 at 1:00 a.m. @ the Hard Rock Cafe. Be there for the future of rock. They’ll also be tearing the house down at the FREE Blacksheep party on Saturday the 16th @ Emo’s (afternoon show 2-6) with Dead Low Tide, Sparta, Pleasure Forever, etc. YOU DON’T NEED A SXSW PASS TO GET INTO THIS SHOW, and we think there’s gonna be free beer at this thing too, so don’t fuck this up. Show up early to make sure you get in.
In addition to Your Enemies Friends and The Icarus line playing shows, Travis Keller and Tom A. of Buddyhead flame will be speaking on a SXSW panel called “Loose Lips Get Page Hits” on Saturday, March 16 from 3:00 pm – 4:15 pm. It will be held in the Austin Convention Center. The description for the panel is as follows: “Gossip about musicians draws an audience online. Writers who pass along rumors and email addresses of artists have also drawn the attention of attorneys. What are the ground rules on dishing the dirt?” Come and throw stuff.
The Revolution Smile situation:
There’s nothing more boring and self-indulgent than long-winded crybaby rants about how somebody has been done wrong. We have no desire for our dirty laundry to be completely exposed to the public at large, but there has been lots of talk here and there about The Revolution Smile’s album release on Buddyhead, and we are tired of answering the questions about what happened. So to end the confusion, and to set the record straight on our behalf and everybody else who was waiting for the album they had seen advertised, talked about etc., here is our sole explanation. A full length album was recorded, mixed, sequenced, and mastered. Artwork was layed out, liner notes were spellchecked, release dates were set, and everything was basically finished for the “We Are In This Alone” album. The band as well as Buddyhead put many, many hours into making the album and release of it a reality, and we were all pleased with the results. It really is a good album. Up until this point, everything was agreed on verbally, seeing as how we were all friends, and the last thing we see Buddyhead as, is big business. The contracts we were having drafted were very simple and basically said the band would agree on letting us put the album out. It wasn’t anything like us owning their ass for 3 albums or anything, it was just to protect our rights to the one album we would be releasing. Before the album was manufactured and released, the band started to be courted by major labels, and of all of them, they chose Fred Durst’s Flawless Records to sign to. (You can read all about that on sacramento.com) Soon after the news of their signing, we learned of the band planning a tour with Puddle Of Mudd, and being managed by “the firm”. By this time, the band’s legal team had given us the contract back, and everything we had agreed upon had changed. The new additions to the contract would only allow us to “license” the record for a 9 month period as opposed to owning it outright as we had all originally planned, as well as allow the band to re-record all the songs on our album on the Flawless debut. The 50/50 split we had agreed on for royalties paid to the band (which is a VERY generous deal you can have on an independent release) was not good enough any more, and mechanical royalties were asked for on top of that. The bottom line was that for us to release the album would have meant that we would have basically lost thousands and thousands of dollars so we could “have the privelage” to put out an album for 9 months, and then have it taken away by the singer of Limp fuckin Bizkit. We would basically be spending a year of our lives being a street team for Flawless Records, laying down “credible” groundwork, only to lose thousands and huge chunks of our lives. Not to mention the fact that the band was working closely with and considering being managed by a company who had previously threatened our lives. No thanks. At this point we made the decision not to release the album. Our decision has nothing to do with “corporate rock”. We are not diehard indie idealists. We knew the band was interested in being on a major label, and we were more than willing to help them reach that goal eventually. At some point though, you have to draw a line in the sand. It’s such a cop out to say, “the music is the only thing that matters, if the music is good nothing else matters.” In a perfect world that would be nice, but living in Los Angeles, we are surrounded by a plethora of music industry sleaze bags. There’s no reason to get in bed with these people in order to have your music heard, especially when there’s tons of other people willing to help you make that happen in a much less offensive way. Maybe we are a bit of snobs for saying this, but touring with Puddle Of Mudd is definitely beyond our realm of understanding. But this is not a mud slinging contest or meant to stir up more controversy. The Revolution Smile are smart people, and can deal with their career any way they want to and we respect that. Although our ideas on being a rock band differ, we still feel they are a good band and we wish them the best of luck. There is no doubt in our mind that they will make a great album, and we doubt they will let themselves be totally manipulated in their current situation. We understand that all of their decisions relating to this matter were made on a business level, and not a friendship level. The point is, we’ve never operated Buddyhead solely on a business level, and we don’t do Buddyhead because we want to be businessmen. We do Buddyhead because we are music fans, and getting involved in any kind of cut-throat music industry bullshit just isn’t worth our time.
- Travis Keller & Aaron North

In even more Puddle Of Mudd news, apparently the singer has recently spent some time in jail for beating up his girlfriend. Does she like the way you smack her face?
A new issue of Buddyhead is up, in case you never leave this page anymore. Yes, new stuff…. go.
Right after the Juliana Theory complete what is sure to be the equivilent of AUDIO CANCER on tape for their Epic Records debut, the headset geek and his minions are headed out on the road to spread their filthy Jesus-emo on a month long tour with Glassjaw and Piebald. We’d rather feed our first born children to sharks than be in the building when that audio shit storm comes our way.
America got a bit more “pink” on friday…. Aaron Icarus is back in town. You might also notice that Buddyhead looks a little smarter now too cos he’s a little more grammatically inclined.
That creepy moustached child molester looking singer dude from Korn is directing a porno for Vivid Video. Rumor has it that “National Pie Eating Champion” Fred Durst not only appears, but participates in a scene where someone is invading ol’ Fred’s butthole with a strap-on dildo. But that’s just what someone told us.
Coachella looks good. There won’t be Iggy Pop to search for this year, but I guess doing lines with the Gallagher brothers while making boarding school jokes at The Strokes won’t be too bad. The line-up is as follows:

Although they aren’t playing Coachella, Spiritualized are currently slaying crowds all over the UK with their sonic drug assualt sound, and they will soon be heading to Canada and North America in April and early May 2002 for 20 to 27 shows. More dates scheduled to come, J. Spacemen doesn’t want to tell you all of the dates yet cuz he doesn’t like you. And he can do those kinds of things cuz he’s a badass.

Apparently Jane’s Addiction can’t take a hint. The fact 6 people showed up for their reunion tour Jubilee (the reunion tour of 2001, we know it gets confusing with them reuniting all the time) hasn’t deterred the burnouts from planning a new album. And there’s even more good news! Guitar greaseball Dave Navarro is working on a follow-up to last year’s mercifully hidden gem Trust No One. Damn! I knew we forgot to put a few records on the worst of 2001 list! It could be a very long year folks.
March 5th was a scary day. Jeff Wood, of the band Shat, got a computer. Look out girls.

This past Saturday, March 9th, VH-1 taped a mock Punk Rock Aerobics class at CBGB’s for a VH-1 news segment. Basically a bunch of dorks in tights, who are strifing for that “perfect stomach” were down there sweating like gerbils and listening to “punk rock classics”. The weird part is, a live band featuring J Mascis and Evan Dando covered two or three songs. We heard the knobs over at VH1 had trouble finding a “fairly well known artist or rising star to provide the vocals”. If anyone from VH1 is reading this, Jeff Wood said he’s available to do this little project as long as he can touch the girls in tights. Give him a call at 973 879 5165
Britney Spears has proven to be more entertaining than most of the rock n’ roll world. The best part is that the reason she’s entertaining is because she’s dumb as shit. First, she was qouted as saying Las Vegas was the home of Elvis Presley. That was a good one. Then, this week, she was asked why she covered “I Love Rock n’Roll” in her new movie “Crossroads”, Britney smittenly replied “Well, because I love Pat Benatar!” Someone buy this bitch a Joan Jett record. I mean cd.
Ali G. signed a deal with HBO and will host a U.S. version of “Da Ali G. Show.” Looks like We better get cable.
Go buy the Gang Of Four and Joy Division box sets. Pick up The Who’s Live at Leeds Deluxe Edition while your at it. You’ll thank us later.
Kittie, Skinlab, and My Ruin are set to hit the road on the “Fuck Your Label” Tour. No one over here really gives a shit about this. We like mentioning Kittie though cause the lead singer wants Aaron Icarus’s schlong even though he’s a little turd burgler.
Ex-Ghetto Boy, Scarface is shortening his name to just Face. We’re not gonna make a joke about Face seeing as how his mind still may be playing tricks on him and we don’t wanna get shot. Face is almost done with his 7th solo album, “The Redemption.” It’ll be out in June.
The CMJ Music Marathon will take place October 30 – November 2, at the Hilton New York in the heart of New York City.
The Grammy after parties were pretty boring. The highlights were Kid Rock and Pamela Anderson standing under a bunch of lights being stupid famous people, Kelly Osborn saying to her mother “Hey mom, Ofer thinks you’re hot”, Gideon introducing Jack Osborn to Thom Yorke with “his dad was in Black Sabbath”, meeting the guy who wrote “The Dirt” – the Motley Crue book, and had a bellyful of free drinks. Speaking of the Osborns, I don’t have cable so I haven’t seen it, but from what I’ve heard their tv show is one of the best things on lately. I’m moving into Rama’s house in a few weeks, and he says he has some crazy cable shit with like 5,000 channels, so I’ll prolly see it then.
The Ozzfest 2002 Lineup so far is as follows. We need to get Jack Osborn a Shat cd it looks like.

Weezer is already making a new record. Even they knew their last album was a pile of puppy dookie. The band has posted some demos of the new album, their label isn’t happy about it. We didn’t listen to it though cuz frankly their fans are a bummer. http://maladroit.uwftm.com
Jimmy Eat World will be on ‘Saturday Night Live’ for the April 6th show with Cameron Diaz.

Dan the Automator has a record coming out called “Wanna Buy a Monkey?”. They’re hyping it as “the first mixed compilation he’s released in his decades-long career”. The Gorillaz show in LA was about as exciting as watching cartoons on tv from 300 yards away. Wait, that’s what it was.
This is the funniest thing we’ve ever seen. Painfully funny. The bass player from Korn has a rap record in case you haven’t stumbled onto this. It was bound to happen people. www.fieldysdreams.net
Courtney Love just sold the rights to publish Kurt Cobain’s Journals. Travis emailed her and asked her why. Here’s her answer:
“i think its cooler if he can speak for himself rather than have people keep speaking for him also he doesnt get alot of credit for being funny and for his weierd gearheadedness
alot of this tsuff is about snare sounds- like three pages on snare sounds and mic’s for snares andhow snares are built, resplete with illustrations.
Cobain had an awesome economy of sound ande was also generallyb rilliant
Nevermind for instance- most anyone would use 24 tracks- i know i do-= extra track/??put a dulcimer on there, an empty track is a total tempattion, but Cobain understood at a young age that 16 track tape had more solidity, more room for bass, he hated hightones and was big fan of mid tones, and he explains these things ind ertail
Obviously theres many things wich arent anyones business- sexual things, romantic things- but his essays on depression,. suicide, drug addiction. physical pain are enmlightening and beautifully written
if people want to continue to be fans f his ( and its not something in cessation, kid turns 16 , ismale and comes form a broken home in america he tyrhopws out his wigga records and buys nirvana. and discusses kurt and nirvana.) and to preface things with a fantasy “whatw ould kurt think of such and such”
he was very prolific and helpful ina nswering these things- and he should, although dead and gone, have a chance to fill in those blanks with his own brilliance in his own words
how simple is that?
it’s a great primer for anyone wanting to be a rockstar when they grow up- a snapshot of a kid who did, and the things he did to get there, and the amazing amount of discpilin e,aeathetic and work he put into his music, his muscular economy and his personal very opiniontaed taste, ( celtic frost? im barfing! he loved them)
he was good rock writer and reviewed records and also sent reviews tofanzines and magazines when he was younger- and he was a boys boy= alot of grosss out comix and sick jokes about farts and pubes and Sabbath, alot of very UN me stuff
people have me and him confused, they think of him as a much bigger romanticist than he was, when he wrote a lyric that was it- boom. done.
When iowrite a lyrtic it comes from ages and pages and months of long epic poenes that i colect a couplet from, s wether people know it or not theyve
a- emasculated him
b- atributed to him qualities wich are mine and not his
c- nto allowed himt o be himself
it is the obvious zone of what needs to be, that his meant for the world comics- ideas- opinions bne made public.
There are many things wich noone will ever see, it hionk inheavier than heaven theres too much invasion into his sexual self and i would never allowfor that- we allwrite our own porno ( at least i hope we do) and i dont find it should be available for public consumotion.
i also think in charleys book theres alot of charley and nto as mucha ctual kurt.
i know charley cross got edited alot but kurts funniness seeemdt o get sacrificed, hewas very very funny.
i would nmever go out with someone who wasnt drop dead fucking funny.
let him speak for himself
-Courtney Love”
